Yesterday, I read that the Polish government has launched the Polish Large Language Model (PLLuM)—a freely available AI model designed to support the development of artificial intelligence, particularly in public services. According to Notes from Poland, "PLLuM is proof that we can develop modern technologies on our own terms, in our own language, for the benefit of citizens."
As of 2023, Poland’s population stood at 36.69 million. Using DotDB.com, I found 22 registered domain names that exactly match "Pllum," including Pllum.org.pl. A quick trademark search for "Pllum" returned zero results, so I decided to register Pllum.org myself.
Recent reports indicate that several European countries are developing their own large language models, including Finland, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Italy, and Spain. Finland, in particular, stands out for hosting Europe’s fastest supercomputer, which is used to train these models. Additionally, companies like Silo AI (Finland) and Aleph Alpha (Germany) are actively developing open-source LLMs focused on European languages.
