Wondering your thoughts on value of this one word .net
Thoughts on value for reseller vs. enduser? Development ideas?
Nice name. As for value, I would say mid $xxx to low $xxxx for reseller. End-user should bring somewhere in the low to upper-mid $xxxx.
I feel your primary end-user focus should be on dog obedience schools. These schools are very popular now, and this keyword fits like a glove.
As for development, you could create a nice dog obedience school directory and base the revenue off direct advertising for the schools.
Good Luck.
i don't agree with the above appraisals and think
that you will not be able to get more than xx for it
Appraising: Obedience.net
Hi, I'm hoping this appraisal is useful to you. I want to pre-face this appraisal with I do not claim to be an expert, I just look at domain factors and try to draw sensible conclusions. I'm open to debate on the subject and encourage it.
When I appraise a domain name I take 4 factors into consideration.
1.) TLD (Value of the extention)
2.) Sales Comparables
3.) Keyword Data & SEO Potential
4.) Branding Potential
Based on the 4 points above I get a price conclusion that a re-seller would be willing to pay for the domain name and the estimated sales price you might get from an end user. I can also estimate how long it may take you to sell for the end-user price. That said lets go into the details.
1.) TLD
It's a well known fact that .com is the most valuable domain extension. Mainly because it's been around so long and so many sites use it. Not to mention it helps with rankings in the search engines. The question in your case is how much less is .net than .com?
A site I like to use is 3character.com. Although they appear to be down, I was able to get a look at the last cached page to get these details.
3-Letter .com - $4600 (+ $50 since February 1, 2012 report) (See Related Commentary on Front Page)
3-Letter .net - $450 (Unchanged)
3-Letter .org - $235 (Unchanged)
3-Letter .info - $40 (Unchanged)
3-Letter .biz - $20 (Unchanged)
3-Letter .us - $10 (- $2 since February 1, 2012 report)
3-Letter .mobi - Reg Fee (Unchanged)
The idea with 3 letter domains is they could stand for anything, and these are the prices for the averages of 3 letter domains. Therefore the only thing that could make one 3 letter domain better than another is the extension. So LLL.net sells for $450~ on average, and LLL.com sells for $4,600. You can see the difference, in fact the difference is .net sells for 9.78% of whatever the .com equivalent sells for on average. Keep in mind there is always exceptions for domains that match well with the extension but I'm talking about things generally, and in the case of obedience.net versus .com, they both in my opinion match the extension as well as they can.
That 9.78% figure is important because when we look at sales comparables later we can use .com references and take 9.78% of that to get an idea of what .net might sell for to the right end-user.
For re-seller purposes, domains that have a lot 'lower' extensions claimed adds immediate value to the domain. When I say 'lower' extensions I'm referring to extensions with lesser value than your extension (.net) Ex.) .info, .us, .cc, etc.
The reason I believe this ads value is because of the renewal rates on some of these 'lower' extensions. For example if someone is willing to pay $75 to $100 year just to get the name in a lower extension that means that person would most likely easily pay you at LEAST that much to grab your higher level extension if not more!
A quick search on domainsite.com reveals the following:
obedience.com(Taken)
obedience.co(Taken)
obedience.me(Taken)
obedience.biz(Taken)
obedience.info(Taken)
obedience.net(Taken) <- you
obedience.us(Taken)
obedience.org(Taken)
In the domains extensions I did see taken for your domain I didn't see anything out of the norm, but I can easily say (and I'm not saying this is what your domain is worth), but it's easily worth at least 3-4X reg fee to a reseller alone just based on the registrations, because it's likely one of the current owners of the name would not mind an upgrade for a reasonable price. That said, given that registrations are about $11 for .com domains, lets just say $33-44 base value so far. This will continue to climb or decline as we continue to review more factors.
2.)Sales Comparables
I organize sales comparables by HIGH QUALITY and LOWER QUALITY. HIGH QUALITY sales comparables are names that are very similar (if not the same name) to your own or include your word in the domain. They tend to not vary by more than 4 characters to your domain. LOWER QUALITY sales comparables are the next best thing that 'sort of' relates to your domain, maybe it's similar phrase or word with similar meaning and around same domain length.

(could not find anything else easily, if someone finds something feel free to let me know and I'll update this)
Fortunately I was able to find at least '1' sales comparable. I tried searching for 'obediant, obedient' and could not find any other domains sold. In fact the only domain under record is DogObedience.com (which is what I think of when I hear the word obedience anyways).
If someone was willing to pay for a 'two word' .com domain, $2,950, 9.78% of that would be $288.51. Of course your domain is a single word and less characters so this raises the value potentially. As it stands it's probably safe to estimate End-User Sell Value at Base: $288.51 + Low $XXX. The bad part being that given the current records it may take a long time to sell this domain for that potential reward. The last sale was in 2009, it's not 2012, and there is no records before that. That makes the domain very speculative, but the potential value is clearly there, you will just need a lot of patience.
3.) Keyword Data & SEO
I'm an SEO person. I'm good at ranking sites to the top of search engines like Google & Yahoo. Domains with .com & .net extensions are great for ranking, but there is a lot of detail that goes into it. I'm not going to explain everything here for lack of time but I'll explain the general factors I look for in valuing a domain name's SEO potential and therefore the value for it.
Before we begin, you need to know some terms. CPC is (Cost Per Click). It's how much it costs the advertisers who post there ads on Google every time someone clicks their ads. It's averages around $2-$3, but for some industries and keywords I've seen it as high as $120/click for specialty keywords relating to auto insurance.
Factors I use are:
A.) Keyword Searches & CPC
B.) Current Competition (Page Rank)
Section A)
Generally a keyword with a HIGH CPC, means people are willing to pay a lot of money to acquire front page exposure.
Section B)
Page rank refers to the ranking of the page on Google. It's a score system 1-10, 10 being the highest, 1 being the lowest. It's exponential as well. So a page rank of 2 is 10X greater than a page rank 1. A page rank of 3 is 100X greater than a page rank 1. A page rank 4 is 1000X greater than a page rank 1, and so forth etc.
Google ranks pages based on the amount of links you acquire and totals the value of all those links. Links from sites with high page rank are worth more and increase your own sites page rank. If you are interested in how this works type in Page Rank on Google and read the Wikipedia article.
The point is the higher the page rank, the more it would cost an SEO person (like myself) to buy a link from someone to point to my page. Therefore the higher the page rank of the sites in the top page positions the more expensive it will be on a monthly basis to maintain that top position for the keyword and the more initial risk will be involved.

1.) Wikipedia Page for Term - PR:5
2.) Another Wiki Page - PR:5
3.) Dictionary Page - PR:3
4.) Different Dictionary Site - PR:3
5.) Actual Dog Training Site - PR:2
There was no need to go further down the list. The fact that the the highest legitimate site for obedience, was a page rank 2 is good news. This means it should be very simple to rank your domain in the search engines in the rank 4-5 positions.
If you go to google images and type in "Google Heat Map", you'll see a nice visual representation of where most visitors click. The top position gets about 70% of all the clicks, with the positions under it getting about 20%, and everything else 10%. I see real potential to rank easily with your keyword and capture 20% of the traffic for this keyword.
So what is the traffic then?
You can check this using the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. Look it up on Google.
[Obedience] as an EXACT search brings up: 22,200 global search results with average CPC's around $3.19!
This means you have the potential in position 4-5 on the page to capture 20% of 22,200 visitors, that is around 4,400 visitors a month you could expect to your webpage. The click through rate for ads if you put up Google Adsense on your page would be around 0.05% (from my personal experience, and this is a worst case figure). With Google Adsense you make money everytime someone clicks on their ads from your website. If they are willing to pay $3 a click for that keyword, they are probably willing to pay at least half that for pages similar to the topic or $1.50.
That said, 4400 X 0.05% click through rate, means you can estimate about 220 clicks potentially. 220 clicks at $1.50 a click comes out to $330/month you could be earning off your domain just from adwords! I suggest you try this =).
The risk is worth the reward here to an SEO. To put it in perspective, to buy page rank 3-4 links from similar 'dog' or 'obedience' sites will probably run you around $40-$50/month to convince a site owner to host your link, but you could be earning $330 for that small investment! That's a gross profit of $270~ roughly and having that position only raises the value of the domain even more once it's there.
On this alone, the value of the domain name's base is easily increased to the $270 for the reasonable risk involved, and once it's actually in 4th,5th position you could then ask 12X your monthly ad sense profit at a MINIMUM and sell the domain very quickly as well since it's actually making money.
4.) Brandability
I think this domain has great brandability as a dob obedience site. It's great simple and easy to remember. The fact that people have already posted amounts in the low $XXX on here to pay for your domain is evidence of the brandability already. I don't see any issues here.
-------------------------------------
In conclusion if you total the categories...
1.) TLD +$30-$40 (base value)
2.) Sales Comparables + $288 + $ Low XXX
3.) Keyword Results +$277 + $low xxx (seo resellers)+ $low $XXXX to $mid XXXX once in SEO Position with income.
4.) Brandability (makes this easier to sell to resellers and end-users)
These factors in mind: I appraise this domain name at around:
Resellers: $310 + $Low XXX
ReSellers: $310 + $Low XXXX - $Mid XXXX with ranked position & income.
End User: $288 + $low $XXX
In other words, I believe you could make more money with your domain by developing it, ranking it's position for the keyword 'obedience' and THEN selling it, rather than just waiting around to sell it for about the same money you could sell to a re-seller right now anyways.
I hope this appraisal gave you some interesting insight or was useful. Have a good day!

Thanks for the comments and likes everyone =). If you do decide to develop the domain name please keep in mind these rules when getting links from other sites.
1.) It takes 3 months for PR to transfer to you (sometimes faster, but this is a safe estimate).
2.) Make sure that when you buy links (or get links from people) that the links use the keyword 'obedience' when linking to you. So for example "Here is a great site for dog <a href="obedience.net">obedience</a>". You want the part that is linked to use your keyword, this makes a huge difference in the ability for page rank to transfer to you for that keyword, especially if the link came from a site that currently has high page rank.
3.) Make sure the links DO NOT include the 'rel=nofollow' tag. Many people will sell you links and rip you off by including this. This makes it so NO page rank will transfer to you making the purchase of the link pointless. People do this to protect there own page rank from 'leaking' out. Look this up on Google to learn more.
Let me know how it goes for you and what your profit margins wind up actually being when you start to gain top page position. I always like working off real data and would be interesting to hear your experiences.
As for doing this as a job (as per another comment), I never thought about that but could be interesting. If someone wants to help me with that I'm open to ideas.
