Apple established an App Platform for it's phones and became a multi-trillion dollar company
Chat GPT established an AI Platform to utilise AI to develop systems and it is one of the fastest growing organisations in the world
Minecraft pioneered the Game Platform idea to allow for thousands of games to be developed
Uber pioneered a rideshare Platform system to allow individuals to compete against big taxi companies
I am pitching the idea of a Manufacturing Platform system to allow small business to start manufacturing companies with low start up costs.

The economics of #PlatformSystems is that the platform system covers the infrastructure costs so that individuals and small businesses can compete against big companies without high start-up costs. It can be called #PiggyBacking. Companies going for the big dollars are increasingly developing #PlatformSystems as they open the doors for thousands of developers to build on top of their systems to compete with the #PowerOfMany. The platform mindset is what is a driving force for growing the number of multi-trillion dollar companies that exist.

I think #Platform is an often overlooked term in language. I don't think it gets a lot of traffic now but I do think it has the potential to grow in popularity in language as more people want to build #BlackSwans (#TrillionDollar+ companies) instead of #Unicorns (#BillionDollar+ companies). In my opinion, there are a lot of platform business opportunities that haven't been realised.

I am interested in opinions on the word platform. Is the word too generic sounding to market well? It is kind of a #BusinessOfEverything term as it can be used in a vast range of industries.

It's not that great of a term to me. It's really the thing before "platform" that is the important part.

Thanks for the quick responses. I think platform might be like financial and B2B words. Powerful concept. Poor brand potential.

Platform is definitely a broad term but that is also why it has staying power:
In business and technology the word has evolved from meaning a simple base or foundation to describing an ecosystem that enables others to build products services or tools on top of it Because of that flexibility platform fits naturally into many industries including software manufacturing logistics entertainment and services

The examples you mentioned Apple App Store ChatGPT Minecraft Uber highlight a common pattern:
Platforms reduce the barrier to entry by providing shared infrastructure This lets individuals or small teams create value without needing full end to end capabilities That general idea is not tied to any single niche which explains why platform is widely used even if the term itself is not always searched heavily on its own

Is it too generic
It depends on context:

As a standalone brand name platform can feel too broad or abstract unless paired with a distinctive modifier
As a concept in business terminology it is becoming more established Analysts investors and founders increasingly use the word platform to describe models that rely on network effects modular design and shared infrastructure
In domain naming broad words can be both an advantage and a disadvantage They allow wide use but require strong branding to avoid sounding vague

Will it grow in business relevance
Most likely yes As more industries shift from product based models to ecosystem based models including manufacturing the platform concept becomes more central to how businesses scale People may not always search the word directly but they interact with platform systems constantly

So while platform is generic in isolation its meaning in modern business is becoming more specialized describing a model that creates value by enabling others This trend is likely to continue as platform based approaches expand into new sectors

Love this thinking, VURG

Platforms succeed when they enable ownership and leverage, not just scale or buzzwords.
