A word of warning to students or office workers who freely "copy and paste" text from the Internet and pass it off as your own: SkyLine, Inc. has just released Plagiarism-Detector 8.0, a new tool that can verify a document's originality by comparing text to what's available on the web.

I don't know whether this has been posted before
or not. Thought it was worth a share, they mention it as a warning to
students or office workers, but how will this affect the available
content on the web?

Actually plagiarism detectors have been around for a bit now. I can remember back in high school one of my teachers telling us not to copy info from books or the internet cuz they had tools that cross referenced our essays with the internet and published books. This 1 particular teacher would tell us "If any of you want to try to test it, be my guest. But you WILL get caught." From what I can remember, they are actually pretty accurate. Not to mention anything copied from the internet these days can easily be found by google by just entering a sentence or 2 from your report. So no cheating! ;)

Are they really that thorough?

I believe they are suppose to be. In my high school the teachers were all put through training on how to use it efficiently and stuff. They all had to go to some kind of workshop on it. I only knew cuz one of the teachers told us about it. haha.

I teach college courses, and I have to tell you: catching plagiarism is a snap.

Just put a sentence (in quotes) in the Google search box and BINGO! If the paper has been snatched from the web, the search will bring up the entire paper.

Also, if a student has been doing mediocre work all semester and then suddenly submits a brilliant piece of work, the BS meter goes into overdrive.

Yeah, I (and other profs) can be a cheater's worst enemy.

Plagiarism Detectors have been around for quite a long time now, it was not long ago when I needed to do homework (@ my Faculty of Computer Science, which I'm studying) about Plagiarism Detectors... I had to mention I think at least 6 of them and then test them and I can say that it's really very easy to find cheaters, they also have source code (c++,php, etc.) plagiarism detectors.
