Google is your best friend - searched "Phpld template design tutorial" and the very first result was:

On a side note - I started making my own phpld themes and have done four now. As long as you know the basics of html, css and smarty templates you will do fine. I started by taking apart the basic theme that comes with the phpld download. All in all it's not very difficult. You will need to split your theme into four distinct parts - header, top, main and footer.
