PHP member referral links

i am trying to make it so that when someone registers on my site, they will be given there own unique referral link. and then when they give it out, i want it to populate the field with their ID.

Now i am wondering how you make the referral link in the first place? i dont know much PHP, but i am learning. So i need some help giving each user their link, like how do i make it and have it show up for them to see? Please help, or maybe someone can point me somewhere to find help, because i have searched all over and have not had any luck with finding this information.

it would also be great if someone knows how to keep track of how many people each user refers. I am lost

all you need is a unique identifier for the referer, some sites use the persons username and some use a rabdom string or you could for example use the user id field in your database if you have 1.

i do have a user_ID field in my DB.

so would the link look like www.example.com/index.php?user_id=2

???

or maybe www.example.com/index.php?referrer=xxxx
(xxxx=the user_id number or their username or something)

????

how would i be able to know how many people each person referred?
