Opinion on servers

Hey all i'm looking at LayeredTech.com.

I want a server for no more than $135 with cpanel/whm

I was wondering which one you guys would suggest.

An Intel like this :

get the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ package. 3200 = 3.2GHz of the cripledtel Pentium 4, and the pentium 4 u want is only 2.8GHz.

no... the amd is aprox 2.4 ghz... amd hasnt broke 3.0 yet... please also note that an amd ghz is measured higher than an intel ghz

So should i go for the Intel P4 2.8Ghz?
That was my first thought but i don't know much about amd.

imho.. i would go with intel way before amd.. Amd seems to lack certain necessities. DOnt get me wrong, AMD a good processor, just not for a server...

Id say the p4

i would get the AMD. See the amd might be at 2.2 ghz..but the actual speed it runs at is about 3.0ghz.... I have an AMD desktop and it runs just like a 3.0ghz intel.

also amd saves so much energy, less heat..so less chance of overheating or accidents like that.

ok well now i'm kinda mixed. Can i have an expert opinion lmao.

think i'll go for the p4 but if amd is better which i don't know i would go for that.

I dont know what it is worth... I just went with the AMD after reading all of the posts to me on the same question...

Everyones opinion may differ, heres some information I wrote on Intel/AMD before...


Intel sells 80.5% of the chips on the market, AMD sells 16.6 therefore AMD produces one out of every 6 PC chips. This is the largest market share AMD has had in years. Only problem is, AMD isn't making a profit. And when they have, it hasn't been much. In 2003-2004 they turned very small profits (less then $200,000) but at the end of 2004 they slipped into the red and have continued to stay there.

AMD's 2004 Revenue was $5 billion whereas Intel's was $34 billion.

AMD is currently building a massive producation plant in Germany which will allow them to mass produce chips to an extreme. An extreme that they really don't need. Their current plant can make up to 50 million processors a year however the plant they are building will be able to double their capacity to 100 million chips a year by 2008.

Once AMD consistently makes a profit they should be able to increase their market share.

The average cost of a AMD microprocessor chip is $80 whereas Intel's is $150.

Other examples of microprocessor producers are Hewlett-Packard & IBM.

I believe IBM has the fastest right now.

I think i'll be going with the P4.

But one more thing whats the difference between a P4 and P4 HT?

if you said xeon vs. p4 ht



that might be more of a challenge :P
thats my personal expereince though, stil loverall AMD they dont overheat like them damn pentiums

yeah but i want to know the difference between them.
HT is hyperthreading but what exactly does it do more than a basic P4?

hyperthreading makes the CPU think it has two cores i think. almost like a 1&1/2 core processor. but i would still say go with an AMD. go to any computer based forum and ask of an opinion between those two and i will guarantee they will say AMD. www.tech-forums.net would be a good place to ask. and about AMD not making much profit, none of that matters here. And that is not necessarily a bad thing, it means they are giving us good prices.

He wants to know which chip is better for the server. The answer is the AMD. Ask around...

Intel imho... i cant wait for the viiv... I hate the amd cores, never liked them, i owned 2 servers wit them, and i didnt have the same results of the = intel processor
