OpenNIC: What is it? .Free, .Geek, and .Oss ?

I've looked into the site, and tried to figure out how they are going to manage the .free, .geek, .oss, and .glue TLDs.

From what I understand they are creating an alternate number of DNS servers (peer system?) that resolve the new TLDs and in that way they compete against ICANN.

Very interesting, but a simple search in the forum returned basically nothing, so I am wondering if anybody knows a bit more, or has installed the client and checked how it works.

I didn't know this has been going on for this long. According to the article, .biz was started by eDNS (some defunct alternative DNS root system), and later became what we have now.

There are loads at it. One I seen even allows you to make up your own extension. Even trying to cash in on the IDN boom.

As for domainers, one born every minute!
