I appreciate this topic is not "domaining" as such, but I thought there might be people here who would be interested, especially as there seems to be no end of people complaining about existing registrars !!!
I've been working on an Open Source EPP Domain Name Registrar package, as none seemed to exist and (when running backend registry services) I was often been asked about one.

If you register at the demo site you can use any fake email address that looks believable. It won't email you (receipts etc), unless you confirm your email address.
There's still work to do before it could go live, but its def getting there. The `README` is about a week out of date, so there's more functionality than is listed there.
