What do you do if you own a domain on a .COM when a group of citizens, purportedly representing the poorest 99%, have a loosely knit organization based on a term?

That's right - you seek out one of the rich 1% and ask them for a large donation to support the shoeless!
The "large donation" will actually go to the Domainer's wallet. While the domain will go to the shoeless.

Protesters: "Ok, we now have a domain of our own. NOW WHAT????"

And the ultimate cliche in that news article was this:

"... the domain investor is not personally interested in the Occupy Wall Street movement."

Very interesting, I don't see a 1%er buying this domain and then handing it over to the group unless it is a PR Stunt which I seriously doubt will ever happen.

They have absolutely no need for this domain. They're already #1 for the term. The pitch is not for those supporting the movement.

she should just donate this to the cause of the movement. The 1% should just donate some food and warm clothes to be practical help. http://oxsi.com is hosting free for the movement. But one thing I do agree, the movement has no leader, no structure, is not well organized. A central place like http://oxsi.com should be significant improvement.

There is no movement - there is just disgruntled people.

The time will come when the gatherings will become more unruly.

I can see the huge global problem - I just don't see a reasonable fix.

I don't think a website will help - a cool phone app, now that would be something...

I'm really not a Domainer at heart. I'm more of an End-User.

"Occupy" is supposed to be a single-word, and must be Gold to most domainers???

As for me, i dunno, i think it's a lousy name. It doesn't describe anything. Somthing like "OccupyLibya.com" would have been a better domain, rather than just "Occupy.com".

To my mind, a "two-word" combination that describes something, can be more brandable than just a single word domain that can be very vague.

Will 1% give the donation?
I think it will give

Occupy Wall Street turned down this domain and bought OccupyWallStreet.net for $8k for the General Assembly to use.

As there is no leader or organization running the movement, the other popular Occupy Wall Street domains ranking on Google are run by different people. The .net one they purchased will be used for the official Occupy Wall Street General Assembly.

Occupy.com is a good domain, but they just don't need it at a price of $150k. They're already ranking for what they need to be ranking for and in terms of covering themselves from anti-movement crusaders.

I'm surprised they can still afford to waste $8k, given that they're jobless and all. They could simply have opted for free subdomains from Google.

The Free Market at work ...

I'm surprised they didn't start "occupysec"... Or conscript Anonymous to help.

"We use other peoples domains for our own..."

Beginning to think this is a champagne socialist movement.

Yes, free market. And somebody just regged occupy360.com barely a month ago. lol

And don't bother about iOccupy.com either. It's already taken.

During times of recession, speculation on just about anything that you can resell for a buck will make sense.

Before making statements, perhaps you should actually have info to back it up.

Only 12.3% of the Occupy Wall Street protesters are unemployed.

Here is the stats from a completely unbiased (meaning not liberal, not conservative, nothing to do with politics) source:
http://www.fastcompany.com/1792056/occupy-wall-street-demographics-infographic

They have received something in the ballpark of $700k in donations (which WePay, another unbiased source, said the majority of donations comes in small denominations from people with jobs making between $50k and $75k). They can spring for the domain at $8k if they want to.

Anonymous IS a major part of the movement.

Occupy Wall Street is not a socialist nor an anti-capitalist movement. Their message is that the current system, this mangled version of capitalism, does not work.

When a person fails: they lose their home, their business, etc.
When a bank fails: they get a bailout and receive bonuses.

How is that free market capitalism?

For a Movement that claims to fight in behalf of all the jobless people who fell victims to capitalism, they should have been more frugal with their donations.

$8k for a domain, is already an obscene amount by domainers' standards. What more for an "end-user" like these jobless protesters. It's not like they are the Wall Street version of the Salvation Army.

I'm not sure how they would spend that $700k donations to fight corporate America. Maybe use the money to short the stock market, now that Dow Jones is down 3% as of this writing.

Why do you continue saying "jobless protesters" when I just gave you statistics that prove that only a small portion of them are unemployed?

I completely agree that the $8k could have been spent better than a long .net domain name. At the same time, it's a small price to pay to make sure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands.

However, we weren't debating whether $8k for a domain name was a good move.

You said: "I'm surprised they can still afford to waste $8k, given that they're jobless and all."

Which I easily provided evidence to prove was bull and you were wrong about them being able to afford it and that they're jobless.

I can sense that this Occupy protest is a sensitive subject matter to you. To put it on record, i'm sympathetic to all victims of capitalism anywhere in the world.

Going back to this domain name, my DomainTools is showing that OccupyWallStreet.NET has reg history YEAR ZERO. So this was hand-regged for like 11-dollars, and resold for 8-Grand.

Here's the story:
http://blogs.wsj.com/metropolis/2011/11/04/occupy-wall-street-pays-8000-for-a-home-on-the-web/

It's an amusing and unbelievable twist of irony, that these guys protesting about getting screwed by Capitalists, would bite the bullet and let a domainer capitalist earn more than 1,000% profit at their expense by purchasing this domain.

They are no different from those automobile CEOs who begged for bailout money, then went to Washington using corporate jets or First-Class commercial flights.

The domainer for this domain name must have been laughing all the way to the bank.

If i would play my own conspiracy theory, i think the domain was only worth 5k. The wise guy brokered a deal to give the domainer the 5k, and the remaining 3k will go to his own pocket. You have to agree to split the purse, to snag the transaction in your favor.

I just want to post an update to this thread, regarding the collapse of the Occupy WallStreet mentioned in the news just now:

http://news.yahoo.com/us-usa-occupy-2012-051650654.html

It seems one thing these Occupy protesters failed to realize, is how they got ripped-off in the tune of 8,000 US Dollars to buy a pointless domain, the price of which is a complete embarassment to anything they've been fighting for.

They could have simply taken a subdomain from blogspot or facebook--- for free.

...I picked up OccupyGazette and Silent99 (theSilent99) in the .com extension in early Nov 2011.

I dunno if these are a better alternative to the .net name that they purchased or not but it could be had for considerably less than what they did pay...It's interesting as it is a movement that spans many cities around the nation AND world, so I thought the name "gazette" would reflect a news angle toward that end...

the "silent99" is a takeoff from President Nixon's silent majority that garnered him the presidency...in this case it would be the people that may support the movement in ways other than a vocal presence, like buying American or boycotting, for example.

I just do not get how they paid so much for a .net unless there is no one creative enough to have checked for other domain names for the movement...
