At least they didn't have to give away 20k domains, they were actual purchases instead of phantom domains that appeared or handed out like candy. At an average of $30 a pop, it seems to have .won so far for a restricted gTLD at revenue of $810,000 (27k) after launch, with premiums still to be released (it looks like at their discretion as you can .email them about it). However, .time will only tell if they have to .remove restrictions to keep it a float, but I highly doubt it if it's a .small registry with a limited .marketing budget focusing on the .geo area of .NYC only. Are you from NYC? Only they are allowed to register .nyc domains.
Only 20k domains was registered yesterday, in my opinion .nyc was a total failure.
