.NYC opened this week, what names did you register?

Out of all the new GTLDs .NYC was one of the extensions I was looking forward to the most. I pre-registered 8 names, all of which are going to auction.

Are you from NYC? Only they are allowed to register .nyc domains.
Only 20k domains was registered yesterday, in my opinion .nyc was a total failure.

Yes, based in NYC. NTLD Stats shows the registrations now at 26k. But I think it is too early to tell, premium names will be in auction for the next month or so and it depends on usage.

Shame that it only allowed nyc residents to register the name.

I was born in NYC but don't live there now so I was not allowed to register any names. I really like that extension.

So I just registered... fucknyc.com

I am really wondering if .nyc can achieve what .us couldn't.

Will it ever manage the transition from .novelty to .normality - .time will .tell.

At least they didn't have to give away 20k domains, they were actual purchases instead of phantom domains that appeared or handed out like candy. At an average of $30 a pop, it seems to have .won so far for a restricted gTLD at revenue of $810,000 (27k) after launch, with premiums still to be released (it looks like at their discretion as you can .email them about it). However, .time will only tell if they have to .remove restrictions to keep it a float, but I highly doubt it if it's a .small registry with a limited .marketing budget focusing on the .geo area of .NYC only.

I believe that this is one that will work out okay because the city itself seems to be embracing it. If you start seeing a lot of .nyc ads around the city, it will worm its way into the local psyche.

The registration limits, at least for now, are a good thing.

But as sdsinc says, "Time will tell."

If they are currently getting picked up by businesses, mumsflorist.nyc etc why would there be much interest in premiums come an auction?

However,I can see companies related to domains having an asset/ partner with an NYC presence,then bidding on auctioned names with a view to selling them on later when the market frees up. I think that is a certainty.

Chances are many of the current registrations are coming from JV's also. So may be not being embraced by the populace of NYC as much as first thought?

Noticed a couple ads on the subways this week, which is good to see. Also this ->

GoDaddynycbargeessnessinNewOrleans.jpg

"GoDaddy, the largest international registrar, is hosting an independent campaign to promote the launch of the .nyc domain. A giant billboard on the back of a barge will float up and down the Hudson today with the words, ".NYC Domains At GoDaddy, Shhh โ€“ Don't Tell New Jersey" written across it. For the past week, kiosks, coffee sleeves, and subway signage have also displayed the message."

I have this very good feeling about heliport.NYC. does anyone share my enthusiasm?

I just don't think .nyc will be a domainer's gTLD, that the aftermarket will be slight; the restrictions are a bit limiting.

If the advertising continues, .nyc will be an end user gTLD.

And that will be a good thing (although not for us).

Laywers: whoo! I wonder if the owner even realizes this error or if he/she assumes that typos will do well.

@WebSurfer

Yes, I like it. The market for heliports is small but I love the generic brandability with the domain.

Plans to develop or hold?

I am so new to domaining, that I need some education to understand these two concepts (Hold and develop).

Develop = build out a business or a site
Hold = park the domain

Building a business based on a domain? Like, perhaps, a portal for all helicopter ride suppliers in NYC?

(How about we hop over to a thread that discuses these topics?)
