Interesting name...although it'll be challenging to monetize, and will require some serious work.

If you're prepared to make a lot of calls and explore hitting some of the larger namesake entities such as Nippon Life, the JX Nippon Mining Company, Nippon Gohsei, NTT or Nippon Express for example (although i'm sure there are many more smaller companies with Nippon as a name)....you might have something that resembles a pot on the other side of your rainbow. Either that or change it up and rely on the literal meaning of the word and target major players of the international travel industry who are entering, establishing or growing tourism based services for Japanese people to tropical sun soaked destinations.

To develop your own site with this domain, in my opinion would be difficult....it's really only the Japanese people who refer to Japan with this name....and it clearly sounds like a Japanese name.

The .io is a strong emerging extension, but costly to maintain and the right name combination needs to be found or you risk losing money the longer you hold the domain. Depending on where you registered, those annual costs are anywhere from 32 to 90 bucks. Hold the domain for 2 years and unless you sell for a profit quickly, you're soon at a risk of barely breaking even. Unless its a game-changer domain name, by year 3...chances are it'll be at a loss....and the deeper that hell hole can get as the years linger on and more TLDs are launched.

Food for thought, but what the hell do I know.
Good luck with your efforts.

Yes me too...I just can't put my finger on it. I've been thinking noodle bowls or some shit like that, I dunno why.
As long as he finds that, which would require a couple of simple searches, and determines the service(s)/ware(s) of the trademark filing...he just needs to be careful in his efforts on who he targets and how he handles his approach. The large corporations I've mentioned are all beasts...all having the rights to use that name, he could play them off on one another with each having a TM in their respective industries. Due diligence is required.

That doesn't mean he can't still find a deal....Multiple different companies, each a giant in their own right...hold Trademarks on that very specific name. It only means he has to hit them all equally hard with a well planned strategy. No one company can squawk with much weight, as long as he has multiple parties from that arena express an interest. Only if all the companies band together and cry foul...then it would be a theoretical battle amongst those giants on who gets to take the name, otherwise he'll have a few parties with potential interest to consider adding the domain to their strategy. As I said...due diligence.

Plus...two very important elements that weren't mentioned in the previous threads:

1) there's not one trademark for Nippon showing, from my quick search, they're all combo word marks. Again, use your due diligence and detail search this.
2) the reason for this is more than likely the fact that the word Nippon falls under fair use, since its common practice for the Japanese people to refer to Japan itself as Nippon.

Both these are very important to follow up with due diligence on your part. This could mean your domain becomes potentially wide open for you to build a strategy and find a possible buyer amongst some very big companies. For a tech savvy country, the io quickly becoming known as a tech savvy TLD, lets hope the buzz has reached Japan.

Use your due diligence. Develop a solid pitch and you might be pleasantly surprised by the outcome.
