opinion NFTs aren’t a harmless digital fad – They’re a disaster for our planet

NFTs are one of the signature fads of this deeply odd late-pandemic moment. At the centre of all the buzz surrounding them is something exceedingly curious: a digital token, generated using a cryptographic protocol of the same sort that underwrites currencies such as bitcoin, certifying the uniqueness of some image or other digital file. Again, what’s being bought and sold on the NFT market isn’t the artwork itself, just a kind of pointer to it, with the buyer’s name inscribed upon it.

An artwork need have no other merit – neither historical resonance nor social relevance nor aesthetic refinement nor even skill in execution – to be valued in this way. You can’t do anything with Mars House, other than own it. What is valuable about the string of digits that makes up the token is that you as purchaser are the sole possessor of it. And, as the recent legal contretemps makes clear, even that most basic assertion rests on shifting sands. All of which makes Mars House, like all NFTs, an infinite zero, and a perfect representation of the meaningless churn so much of our economy is based on.

… But ultimately, this isn’t why it’s so depressing to see artists rushing to prop up the NFT market. The real problem has to do with a presently inescapable feature of the way NFTs work. Each transaction on the Ethereum blockchain, on which most NFTs are currently recorded, involves a set of calculations called proof-of-work. Those calculations are intentionally designed to be energy-intensive.

Overall, the concept of NFT for the art world is pretty exciting, in my opinion. A public ledger of owners, transparency, opportunity for artists to do more. Outside of art ...the CEO of Twitter selling his first tweet in form of an NFT, these are things (even though a bit mad) are store of value, they do have value to people

The use of NFT is vast, if used correctly and responsibly. Improvements continue over time. The main benefit of NFT I see is simply digitising art, in a sense that: Physical art fades, needs repainted, resurfaced, touching up ...over time the "original" dies ...the planet going digital, in more areas than just NFT, is useful

Idle hands are the devil's playground, yes?

This pandemic has certainly propelled, unsurprising, an embrace of everything digital. I think part of the beauty of real art is in its limitations and subjectivity to physical influence. It gives it far more rarity than anything we could ever produce inside a computer.

Rather than the concept of NFTs, just a sole identifier, imagine if artists redirected energies to a real paint and brush to reproduce the digital art on canvas? There's your zero's and one's, brought to life, giving rarity and saving the planet.

Thanks for the article @Lox. Sadly, the environmental cost of cryptocurrency is getting overlooked as well.

@J Sokol To mine new Crypto in a system shouldn't harm the environment - Period (but it does)

There are alternatives to explore

For what it's worth:

Power Transition Blockchain Sustainability Report with Hedera Hashgraph

"It is paramount that we collectively help correct the narrative that blockchain and distributed ledgers cannot be energy efficient. As such, we've put together a report, Can a Blockchain be Green? to articulate the key areas to consider for sustainability. In the report, we propose that for a technology to be sustainable we must consider its long-term environmental, societal, and economic impact. Hedera, with its unique governance model and efficient hashgraph consensus algorithm, is uniquely suited to meet these requirements today and in the future."

Seems simple: Implementing a piece of code in a system that distributes crypto that doesn't harm the environment ...pretty sure that's possible, even if technical

Crypto and NFT are the future.
It's like saying that the government controlled payment processors are the best example of sustainability, they also work by similar ways.
Edit: beside I feel NFT's are a better way to protect artwork from copy cats.
