Hi John and welcome to NP. To answer your question there's money to be made in all of the above if you have good domains. Being that the industry changes daily it's best to follow the sales thread, articles to see whats hot and what not. This will give you a direction and starting point.

My opinion: You can start with LLLL.com's & Generic One Word Domains.

Hi John, welcome to NP. To answer your questions ,

3L is expensive to invest now..it starts from 25K min
4L and Numeric are okay, but you should be a professional to get a ROI..
Geo and Brandables are cheap to give it a try .

Learn the bascis, follow the trend and sit back patiently. Patience is the most important thing in domaining. You wont get a sale overnight..Good Luck..
