Hi all,

I joined this forum in the hope of learning more about domining. I have experience in SEO and Web design, but domaining is still a pretty new concept for me. I'm hoping to change that by learning as much as I can from fellow domainers.

I'll be looking forward to your suggestions and advice regarding domaining, and would be glad if there is any way my experience can be of any help to any fellow member.

Looking forward to having a great time, not to mention learning a lot :)

Paul

Hi Paul,

My advice - take your time before spending any money - it's not as easy as it looks - don't buy long-winded wacky domain names or 'brandable' domain names e.g. Wizublo unless you intend developing them into a website - try and see what sort of names actually sell (the DNJournal site is useful) and then try and buy similar ones - your web design skills will be useful as you may find it is a good idea to actually develop websites using any names you buy

Research, Read and then do more research. Keep a spreadsheet with all the domains you find available and like. But don't buy right away! It will be tough because you'll feel like you have to grab them before someone else will but patience will save you from wasting your money. Keep adding to that list over the course of a week or two. When you have a good list, really review it thoroughly (keyword popularity, brandability, readability) and then only register the top 10%. See how those domains perform, and then go back and consider getting more from your list if you want (and keep adding to that list when you have new ideas). I found out the hard way, as I am sure many others did here, that you will be tempted to overspend out of the gate due to excitement. Be patient...and smart. Best of luck!

Thank you all for welcoming me here, especially advaita and Timmy11B. That was some good advice mates. Really appreciate that. Would I have the good fortune of getting some more advice? ;)

Yes, steer clear of Network Solutions - they will steal your domain name ideas if you use their site and register them before you get a chance to. Also have a look around for coupon codes they can knock 10 or 20% off the price of a registration.

Thanks a lot for that. Now I won't go anywhere near Network Solutions!
