Related story, courtesy of Globe.com:

"SAN FRANCISCO -- Computer networking equipment maker Netgear Inc. impressed investors in its stock market debut yesterday, providing the latest sign of a financial revival in the long-slumping Silicon Valley.

Netgear's shares surged $3.69, or 26 percent, from an initial public offering price of $14 to close at $17.69 on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The IPO of 7 million shares raised $98 million before expenses.

The healthy first-day gain followed another bullish sign: Driven by investor demand, Santa Clara-based Netgear raised its IPO price from a range of $10 to $12 per share earlier in the week.

The stock market has recently displayed renewed interest in high-tech IPOs after years of disdain.

Three other Silicon Valley companies -- FormFactor Inc., InterVideo Inc., and iPass Inc. -- have climbed in value after launching recent IPOs. Based on closing prices yesterday, the stocks of those three companies had appreciated by 29 percent to 46 percent from their IPO prices.

Those gains are modest compared to the staggering short-term returns generated by high-tech IPOs during the dot-com heyday, when stocks quickly doubled and tripled in value in a matter of days.

Still, the positive performances of the recent high-tech IPOs represent an encouraging contrast to the past few years.

With the losses of the dot-com meltdown still weighing on investors' minds, most start-ups simply couldn't muster enough enthusiasm to pursue IPOs in recent years. Both iPass and Netgear previously fell into this category. Both companies filed IPO plans in 2000, only to withdraw them later amid the early stages of the high-tech collapse."
