After a wait of more than seven years, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has approved an application from a European internet domain registrar to begin registering European web sites with a ".eu" suffix. The application was filed in September of 1997. Some European registrars have been taking pre-registrations for .eu domain names since February.
