You can have them sign an NDA, which you can draw up online im sure. However your best bet is to find a good developer or company that you can trust.

Get a good developer. Don't go for a developer who is gonna charge quite less then market rates.

One can never know but the chances are that the premium developer who charges bit more then the market rates has to worry about his reputation and stuff. Also as he is charging bit more then market rates it shows that he is confident enough and is not dying to make some easy money.

That said. This could even back fire but there are developers in market who are proud of their work and who have a reputation to keep intact.

Other then that as a developer myself I can 100% assure you that if a developer decides he wants to steal your idea. He can steal it no matter what the NDA says. A smart developer knows what he is doing.

Thanks.

And DONT pay nothing up front..

It's attitudes like that which ruin freelance developer markets. Paying upfront is FINE, and is a common practice for a percentage of the agreed payment (developers need to eat too), so long as you have a good agreement with a good developer. There are many developers out there willing to sell their soul and make an app for $400, but if that app took him a week to develop, you're paying him $10/hr for a trade with a great learning curve. If your app needs attention to good security, solid authentication, design and maintainable code, then you really should consider just what you're paying for. On the other hand, you can pay a developer $6000 and he may not understand what your idea is, how to do it (check his skills and previous work), or he may not have good development practices. If you're paying someone the right price, you should be able to communicate effectively to see what stage your app is at and let them know whether or not you're satisfied with the result so far. If they are unwilling to communicate, find another developer, don't just lose your $6k.

Even if your app seems simple, it will pay off tenfold to invest in hiring a team with a good developer, designer and user experience team that practices AGILE development and communicates effectively.
