how much value do you guys think domains lose when the extension isnt .com and instead is .net??

I'd say 5 times less on the average name. Depends on a lot of factors. Is the .com live or dead? Maybe the name suits the .net as well as the .com?

Maybe Duke or someone else has figures that show a great name that has been sold in both extensions around the same time period. Would be interesting.

I personally would register .NET only if the following is true:

- The domain name is premium (eg. loans.net)
- The domain name suits the .NET extension (eg. datacenter.net)
- The .COM version of the domain name is not developed, or if it is, that the owner must be interested in the domain name

Do a search of the name. Particularly look for fan sites of the band so that you have a possible target for the name if you purchase it.

Always do your research, but don't be to back on it, domains get picked up swifty.

I would say that the .nets are almost always less valuable then their .com neighbors. Very few exceptions IMO. (actually, can't think of any but I'm sure there is the odd one).

Personally I think .com fits shops, companys.
.net fits private sites, fan sites, info sites.
