Are .nets basically crap these days?

I realize that when I see a company advertised as .net I quickly think "second fiddle". I am getting the feeling that even other TLDs may pass it, bc instead of saying "second rate", they say something specific like "information" or "us company".

Recently I regged what I thought were good .nets - digitalgps (only the best ones are digital), deepmassage (a very popular kind of massage), and voipglobal, etc. I was excited, only to be met with a lukewarm reaction on other boards. I don't think its the names - I think people just cringe at the extension. Or do I have this wrong?

Perhaps in number of registrations, but for "most popular extension" after .COM I have to hand it to .ORG. It beats .NET in number of developed sites, recognizability, and perceived legitimacy.

.ORG doesn't carry about the same "second fiddle" stigma that .NET does. It's the only other TLD I would consider developing for a major project if the .COM was not available. Of course not ever type of website is a good fit for the .ORG TLD, but its useful for more than just nonprofits.

As for .net being 3rd and .de being second. I personally don't count ccTLDs the same as I do TLDs. Obviously ccTLDs have popularity but it's a target audience especially for .de. Unfortunately I don't speak german and it doesn't appear to be the case for many other english speakers. If you have a .de and it's in english..it's basically worthless. However you can run a .com or .net in german or any language if you choose.

Dang...so RJ is an ORGie. Hmm...gotta spend some time today reflecting on that. There must be a hidden meaning somewhere.

This isnt correct.... .DE is.

I usually exclude localised domains unless they don't require a presence in the country (e.g. .ws, .tv) but I see your point in terms of domains registered. .net still gets better sales results though on dnjournal.

Then they are just fools makes no sense not to spend the extra $7 to have both extensions.


I agree with you 100 % RJ I reg .org for plenty of loan and finance domains......... I believe it is the second best extension to have after .com for this type of domain and I have seen plenty of sales on DN Journal using finance/loan related .orgs

I have never figured out what .nets real strength is I have some decent ones but never get offers on SEDO or Afternic. I guess for LL/LLL and major keywords they are worth having

Reg the .com's and most of the time you have some traffic
(always first check if there is no TM!!)

The gamer ones get a decent amount of traffic compared to the others. I'm not sure, but it might have something to do with the above quote.
