Hello!

Newbie here trying to get the web site for our non-profit up and running.

I have Dreamweaver 8 and Photoshop CS2.

I went to www.lynda.com and used their web-building tutorials--pretty cool stuff!

I decided to build our website using CS2 and ImageReady because I'm most familiar with the CS2/Illustrator interface.

The site looks good, but it looks kind of funny when it's loading as it loads each slice one by one.

Also, we need to insert a CGI-bin script from Paypal in order to accept donations. I cut and pasted the script using Dreamweaver, and it looked and worked great usinf Firefox, but looked terrible in IE!! By pasting in the script, it totally changes the layout of the slices in IE.

Is there an easy way to convert the slices into pure HTML (and not images/slices) in Dreamweaver, and/or is there a way to combine all the slices so they load as one? What's the best way to get the CGI-bin script to work??

Many thanks!!!

First of all, what is your website? Second of all it looks like they are loading one by one because you are most likely saving them as gifs. JPGs really don't compress the image much so they are fairly large in size and take awhile to load. Now think how a 56k dial-up user views your site. In Dreamweaver there is a place to view a site with different connection speeds. This helps you determine the best layout.

I would recommend saving them as GIFs or PNGs. The bad thing about a PNG is it doesn't capture color perfect. If you have a background color the same as the PNG it will look off. Another recommendation is to cut back on the images. A lot of the times you don't need all of the images and can do some tricks with coding to make it look the same.

About the CGI problem, that is an easy fix. I can help you set that up. If you want some help coding this PM me and I would be glad to help.

The type of images is not an issue here, and you can't convert images to HTML. If the page looks funny when it loads, it's because it's still loading. If you avoid using Photoshop and Dreamweaver to slice your pages and hand-code instead, you will be able to make a more efficient design that may or may not load nicer.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter how it displays as it loads, as long as it looks right when it's ready.
