I'm currently living in a country where I'm surrounded by Cyrillic, so maybe I'm a bit sensitive to and supportive of IDN's. For those of us who are used to the Roman alphabet (without diacritical marks), we often forget that most of the world uses other alphabets and marks. Right now, the infrastructive of the internet favors Roman alphabet, but I can see how others might want to make changes that would include easy use of Cyrillic, Chinese and Japanese characters, etc.
There is a certain pride that a country takes in its own alphabet and characters, so these changes may come faster than one might think.
