Hi guys,

Does a nameserver service exist where the domain owner is able to set the nameservers of a domain to say a company who offers a domain management service, and you're able to manage the domain using the management service (i.e. you don't need to change the nameservers on the domain directly with the registry, but you are able to alter where the domain points to using the management service, since the domain is on the management services nameservers)

For example, if I set the domain

obscuredomain.tl

nameservers to NS1.DOMAINMANAGEMENT.COM and NS2.DOMAINMANAGEMENT.COM

and I can login to my fictional "domainmanagement.com" account and I can change the nameservers on the domain to "NS1.FABULOUS.COM NS2.FABULOUS.COM"

I suppose you could set the domain to your webhost and forward it but this can be a bit frustrating when transferring etc...

I probably haven't explained this very well at all. I own a traffic domain where I have to submit nameserver requests manually and it can take a few days, even weeks for the nameservers to change, since it is an obscure cctld, which is a bit annoying for traffic tests etc...

Can anyone offer any suggestions? There's probably a simple answer that I can't think of - its been a long week :hehe:

Thanks

Try zoneedit perhaps.
In fact all you need is to update the A record in the DNS zone, this is where you put the IP address.

You can also do that with a domain you own. For example you have domain.com and you create the hosts ns1 ns2 etc

Be aware that any changes you make will take time to propagate - DNS is cached and how long depends from one ISP to another.

3rd party dns is what you need.

dnsmadeeasy.com
or
zoneedit.com
or
mydomain.com
or
enom's paid dns (if the domain is registered elsewhere)

I don't use DNS Services any more (the Registrars DNS being good enough for me). I've used ZoneEdit.com and MyDomain.com free services.

ZoneEdit didn't used to have a friendly user interface, I don't know if that ever changed. But they have much more detailed features than MyDomain, which is merely a DNS forwarding service. So pretty easy to understand. There was talk of them stealing some of your traffic, but I think they stopped that practice (again a few years ago)

I have done some research on performance and reliability, DNSMadeEasy wins that hands down, even over much more expensive competition. So if you can afford to pay for the service, I'd definitely go for DNSMadeEasy. OK. I just checked their website. It's $29.95 for 10 domains, + $1.95 per year for additional domains, which is a great deal, imho.

I use EveryDNS for some of my domains, but they no longer accept new signups. Other free options that haven't been mentioned yet are freedns.afraid.org, xname.org, sitelutions.com, and dnsexit.com. Some inexpensive paid ones are powerdns.net and zerigo.com.
