Pretty much the only registar i use alot. Safe as far as i know. Had no problems either. $5.99 .coms pretty sweet.

and that price includes free webmail powered by Gmail (but obviously with [email protected])

DomainSite.com and Name.com are the same company. Used both and never experienced problems.

I've never had any issues with DomainSite. DS' customer service is better than average, but their c-panel is terrible. I've never tried name.com, but as Gerrit mentioned, they are are one and the same with DS. Overall, I would not hesitate registering domains there.

I have never tried them but they seem pretty appealing with $5.99.com names. However my best bet for all domain regs is Godaddy.com

They are major taster so I would not risk keep domains there.

As long as you keep an eye on your expiring and deleting names you should be safe from tasting.

Currently I buy all my .com & .net names from Name.com as they are cheap & reliable.

umm that could happen with any company..

Basically name.com is legit and a good registar and at 5.99 .com you cant really beat that everyday unless you want a crappy registar.

and for the record, name.com is ICANN accredited unlike RegisterFly...

What exactly does this mean? Sounds a little worrisome.

I have a lot of domains with name.com and no problems whatsoever ~ as yet.

I could be wrong. But I believe a taster is a site that when a domain is about to expire, looks at its traffic, links etc, and if they like the name they will keep it? Again I could be wrong but im pretty sure thats what a taster is.

I believe the similarity to Registerfly that Denny is referring to is the suicide pricing.

Here's a post of mine from WHT

So let's do the math. 1st year $5.99 and renewal $7.99 = 13.98. Registrar cost $6.62 x 2 = 13.24. So they make a whopping gross (excluding infrastructure/overheads) $0.74/domain after 2 years.

Of course there will be some who don't stick around for year 2 even though prices are pretty good. They'll lose $0.63 on those 1 year reg/transfers. Assuming as many stay as leave, then they're approx at break-even point at the end of year 2. When hopefully they'll have a big bunch of satisfied new customers.

Sound ok to me, if a bit risky. But if you're going to make a play for market share, this is what a registrar is going to have to do. Unless they can differentiate themselves from all the other commodity domain registrars out there. They have my support at this point. I'm cautiously moving some domains here to see how it plays out.

PS: $7.99 with free whois privacy is an excellent deal, imho.
All my new registrations are now done at Name.com.

:hi:

Actually RegisterFly was never accredited as in going thru the Accreditation process.

They bought a Registrar that was accredited so got their Accreditation
thru the back door.

:hi:

I've been using them lately but they block Who Is queries so your Who Is
info doesn't show.

Every Who Is query receives the response:
"(Your ISP #) has reached its 24 hour query limit."

Any idea why they do this?

I emailed them but their response is I should turn off Who Is Privacy.

I don't use the privacy function.

It makes it difficult to list domains at Sedo, etc as they cannot verify my
ownership easily.

Here's an example of what I mean:

69.56.216.98 has reached its 24 hour query limit.
.com registry whois lookup (whois.crsnic.net)
Domain Name: DOMAINERSMANUAL.COM
Registrar: NAME.COM LLC
Whois Server: whois.name.com
Referral URL: http://www.name.com
Name Server: NS1.1PLUS.NET
Name Server: NS2.1PLUS.NET
Status: clientDeleteProhibited
Status: clientRenewProhibited
Status: clientTransferProhibited
Status: clientUpdateProhibited
Updated Date: 15-dec-2007
Creation Date: 15-dec-2007
Expiration Date: 15-dec-2008

With domains registered elsewhere, MY Who Is info would appear.

Patrick

P.S. Network Solutions does the same thing blocking Who Is queries.

Nobody sane will even try to beat that - what a plan to sell merchandise with 10% loss !

Because they are tasting millions of domains, so they need to hide it also probably too many queries come to their servers because of it.

Lets see how the Unasi lawsuit will go - because name.com making same, not so big scale but pretty big too. Unasi transfered their best domains out of their registrars, because all their domains might be deleted...

Actually. I'm quite happy they are doing this. It's why I use their privacy option on all my domains. Also, when it's me doing a whois look up, the above (short form info) provides me with all the information I really need to know. If, on a rare occasion, need to know who the owner is, I can look them up on the registrar's whois server. So for me, I like this uncluttered format.

stub,

It's great that YOU are happy that they are doing this but you are NOT
their only customer.

As you pointed out, Name.com has a Privacy option which you say you are using.

Name.com has NOT given me any option.

I am NOT using their privacy option yet MY Who-Is info is masked.

I just received an email from Sedo that they will not list my domains as they cannot verify my ownership. this is after about 2 weeks of them trying.

It's not only Sedo. It's everyone.

No company is going to manually do a Who-Is search on Name.com's
Who-Is server. And they should not have to.
