Well I had a look at this, With just basic features and not using any other script about $5,000 for the script using a few coders but then it goes up[ with wanting mor eon it.

Not much point, Myspace and Facebook are the best so should keep it at that

A lot more than $5k for something of that caliber, that's completely custom.

well a friend of mine said that it would cost few million. I did not agree with him, but I cant agree with 5000usd neither. 5k is nothing. A good programmer gets paid more in a month. And this is lot of human hours.

ps! have no intentions on building the next myspace, just curious how much similar size projects cost.

The myspace code in itself is not all that elaborate - at least from what i've been told. The problem is to find a coder that is well versed in Cold Fusion and has time to do it. Good Coders are either booked solid and appropriately expensive, the not so good ones are cheaper but you're risking a lot of "down payment" by putting your faith in one of the latter.

I'd say it is do-able for 5-10k, especially since there are tons of PHP based myspace/facebook clones available that just need a skilled hand for modification and add on of features.
...and in regards to marketing; how much has MySpace really been marketed? It's been a "college connection" tool gone overboard and simply took the momentum with itself from campus to campus. Viral marketing/word of mouth/college grads that wanted to stay in touch with former class/room mates has propelled the site to reach far beyond dorm walls and classrooms. In itself the idea was genius.

i just would not believe it could be done for around 10k usd. from scrap.
Just to write the project would cost few thousand at least.

my thought was around 100k-200k.

Just think how many human hours every little thing takes.

From scratch it's going to be significantly more expensive. I still don't think it would amount to 100-200k, though. Ultimately, it would probably good to ask the programmers as they definitely know how much they'd want for a job like that. Just "hypothetically" ;)

lets think it this way.
How many peope it would require to get it all done before lets say marketing can kick in?
A good disaigner, few very good programmers, project manager and probably few more people.

How much a good worker from that area wants to get paid? Id say at least 4-6kUSD usd a month. How many months would it take from scratch to successful testing on servers?

Id like to get a comment from someone who has done bigger projects.

Starting from scratch, the project would probably be in the hundreds of thousands. It is not simply the interface, but it has to be:

1) Scalable
2) Reliable
3) Secure
4) Extensible
5) Responsive
6) Maintainable

Developing such a system requires tens of thousands of dollars in planning, design, as well as development hours. My guess is that the initial implementations of these applications were probably quite crude, but to get them where they are today probably required massive amounts of investment - probably in the millions. It would be very difficult to duplicate since you need the experience as well as the know-how in order to do the same applications as they exist today.

You will need a new idea for it to be profitable. The market for the MySpace-type website has been saturated.

Theoretically, you could make a clone yourself for free. It would just be slower than hiring several people to do it for you (though you could cut corners, such as having no admin panel - just using phpMyAdmin)

I think for it there is some serious designing needed. About the flow and the structure.

After you have torn 10 or 20 paper with zig zag lines on it. Some solid ideas will start taking shape.

Basic feature list is most important. Plus similar minded programmers or just one programmer with lots of guts to finish his project. It might get frustrating in between but when there is a project of that scale some parts are surely going to be boring.

As Mikor said above if the creator is himself going to use it. Then he can manage it nicely from phpMyAdmin too. Running some queries at from phpMyAdmin will save lots of coding in administration panel.

my point is not to make another myspace:) Just curious how much projects on that size can cost.

I agree with richrf that it would probably take millions as every little step takes money.

Well it can take $0 to anywhere around whatever you are willing to spend. If a programmer himself decides to go after it. Then he can. Yes his time will be an investment but I have seen many programmers who are having free time with them. So they might someday decide to make something on that scale too.

I'm a professional web applications programmer (10+ years and broad experience). I don't really go after contractual work but I sometimes take it on when the opportunity arises to do something fun.

I'd guestimate that to develop something like Myspace then an indie developer like myself would quote around $15k (and maybe some cowboys would come in even lower). If you were to go to a development house then I should imagine you'd get quotes anywhere from around $50k-$200k.

If you bought php fox you could make it for pretty cheap.

If you want the myspace script exactly as it appears then yes. But in that case you might as well come up with your own idea. But if you were to buy php fox you would have a very similar social networking site.
