Any thoughts about the .mx domains ?

I thought I would try one - bought desktop.mx to see how it pans out. Esibot value 16K and Mexico is a pretty big country. Desktop.me went for 4K which is the closest I could find.

The main Mexican domain is .mx.com with the introduction of .mx around six years ago - I guess this is the same sort of thing as .co.uk / .uk

Many thanks.

Best,
Paul

Its com.mx actually, not the other way around ;) And indeed the procedure it was rolled out was pretty much similar to the .co.uk and .uk.

Now, putting details aside I can't really see the value in the .mx domain except if you would be focusing on Mexico as a target market. The difference between .ME and .MX is that the first has already outgrown the boundaries of a ccTLD and is not associated with Montenegro only. Moreover its prone to clever domain hacks so it might be really fancy for some brands.

The other I'd advise is not to take any domain appraisals too seriously as they are just computer algorithms that cannot take many factors in account. The true valuator of your domain is solely YOU and how much you get from it will depend on your marketing and sales skills. If you see the value in the .MX and have an idea who and how to sell it - then by all means, go ahead. ;)

Thanks for your input Rado. You are quite right that it is com.mx !

I understand your point about valuations. I think that working on 3 - 5% of Esibot's valuations gives a more realistic sale price. If they sell for more then it's a bonus.

I will look for an auction site in Mexico and try to flip there. Maybe enlist the help of Google translate and send a few emails to companies in Mexico too.

I wonder if other forum members have bought mx domains and if they had any luck selling ?

Best,
Paul

I did buy some domains in the past which didn't sell (also highly appraised by estibot)

What I did back then was to check domains that got sold in high values in spain (.es) and buy the equivalent ones in .mx

I'm not sure I would buy an .mx again though... Why? because:
-google uses .com.mx (that's a good indicator of the country's preference)
-from the research I did back then it seems that most companies prefer the .com.mx version
-It is very expensive to hold on

on the other hand though, there is a positive side:
From all of the sales I have checked in the past there are quite a lot that are active sites and not parked or inactive domains.
This is a very good sign that, if the domain has high enough value, it will be bought by a company.

Looking at these stats (a little outdated mind), it seems that internet use in Mexico is fairly low: http://www.internetworldstats.com/am/mx.htm

I can't say I've ever seen a .mx website or even domain sale, so chances are Mexico is your sole market. However, is the term "desktop" used in Mexico? You may want to try the word "escritorio" instead.

Thanks for your advice. I checked out desktop sales in Mexico and they increased by around 25% in the last year or so. I do agree that the domain would only sell to a company based in Mexico.

Best,
Paul
