Hi,
I want to start a Blog hosting service, both free and paid options.

Can anyone suggest a PHP based application that would be capable and extensible?

Seen WordPress MU but doesn't look like it's ready for prime time on a busy site yet.

Any advice most welcome.

What makes you think it is not yet ready for prime time? Wordpress MU is used on a number of sites with 1000's of blogs. Wordpress.com itself uses Wordpress MU to host hundreds of thousands of blogs.

Check the Wordpress mu forums and you'll find a few people running some big mu installations.

donncha announced earlier this week WordPress MU 1.0, release candidate 1, which means WordPress MU is heading for itโ€™s first stable release.

It just doesn't seem to have all the features required to run a complete blog hosting business.

The following look like what I need, so anyone with experience with these here?

www.netartmedia.net/blogsystem (seems very complete system)
www.lifetype.org
www.bloghoster.net
www.b2evolution.net

Any others you know of?
Many thanks,

- Vince

Personally I use muWordpress. It is very stable (at release candidate 4) and can handle huge numbers of blogs with ease. About the only thing missing for you would be the ability to have free and paid blogs and I don't know of a stable, free blog-hosting product that can handle free+paid blogs. If you can afford it, maybe try netartmedia's blogsystem? Or you could offer to pay someone over at the mu forums to code a plug-in for you.

Hi amobsa,
does WordpressMU also handle advertising/banner management in some way?

Although I've never used Wordpress, I would be interested in paying someone to develop the MU version further, but not sure yet if it will be worth the trouble and time involved, unless I conclude that the offering from netartmedia does not meet my needs either.

I'm back from holiday now, so will check their demos fully.
If anyone else has used these, I'll be glad to hear any feedback.
