In 1969, President Nixon wanted to cut half of the funding for the newly formed Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and divert it to the Vietnam War. There was a senate committee hearing in which Fred Rogers was invited to speak.

The presiding senator was openly in favor of the cut in funding. Watch Mr. Rogers effect a total change in the Senator's demeanor and win $20,000,000 for PBS in 6 minutes. Thank God for Mr. Rogers. There will never be another like him.

I think Ron Paul comes pretty close. I see a few parallels in the way they express(ed) themselves. Did you know that Mr. Rogers gave testimony in defense of the Betamax VCR that was very influential in the famous Sony vs. Universal time-shifting case?

I have always felt that with the advent of all of this new technology that allows people to tape the "Neighborhood" off-the-air, and I'm speaking for the "Neighborhood" because that's what I produce, that they then become much more active in the programming of their family's television life. Very frankly, I am opposed to people being programmed by others. My whole approach in broadcasting has always been "You are an important person just the way you are. You can make healthy decisions." Maybe I'm going on too long, but I just feel that anything that allows a person to be more active in the control of his or her life, in a healthy way, is important.
