Hey Folks

So I just grabbed Mp3Skull.co.za on a drop.

Now, here's the thing.... the search term is huge obviously. (It's not a trademark)

Local South African search volumes are about 400 000 and very low competition - I know if I developed the site ranking this would be easy as jam.

The problem is I'm a bit unsure about how to monetize the site LEGALLY, I mean I don't want the drama of getting nailed for providing illegal music downloads.

I'm thinking I could add content with artists and actual song and album titles and so on BUT when they user wants to download they would be redirected to an actual legal download store or perhaps a mobile CPA offer that offers music downloads or something along those lines...

OR

Maybe I should just sell the the domain... would expect to be able to sell it for around
$750
(Estibot values it at $6800 - but as we know that doesn't mean much)

Opinions?

Hi @deez007,

The domain seems great, but 2 things are worrying me:

1. Estibot shows the site category as "Local -- US State Code", which could attribute to an inconsistent appraisal.

2. Mp3 Skull actually has an entry in Wikipedia. Apparently Google caught on to the fact that the .com version was providing links to illegal downloads and subsequently the site has moved to a new domain.

My opinion, I would not built a site on the "bad name" left by the .com. Especially not if you want to to legit referrals or downloads. It would be like Napster back in the day trying to convince people they have now gone legit...

My 2c.

Unless it gets traffic I don't see any value. It's a day old so idk where the $750 is coming from. If the .com owner wanted it then I imagine they'd have registered it by now, but I wouldn't recommend developing it even if it's not a TM as there could still be legal issues

Basically the price of $750 was worked out on potential earnings of a developed site... 400 000 local searches, if ranked in the top 3 slots then lets say it gets 30% of the search traffic...that works out to 120 000 visits, working on a 1% conversion ratio of that traffic on a $1 CPA offer would mean 1200 conversions @ $1 per lead... $1200 per month.. so the $750 was not a thumbsucked figure out the blue :).... there was some method to my madness lol

From a legal stand point there would be no recourse from the .com owners are they were operating an illegal music download site. None the less, taking @Pierre Barnard input into consideration and thinking about it I realize it's still not feasible to invest any time and resources to develop this into a site.

No offense but that valuation makes no sense. Arbitrary SEO rankings, traffic, conversion rates, and clicks don't create value for a domain, otherwise any extension with mp3skull left of the dot would have value as well

No offense taken mate, a domains value is determined by the end user and how they plan on using it. (Dont get me wrong, like I said after contemplation I realize that mp3skull is not worth it - However Seo rankings, traffic and conversions can have a direct impact on a domains value)

I have sold numerous domains to end users in the past that have had no brand value at all apart from being an exact match keyword and having good seo potential. Most of these sales where mid $xxx to low $xxxx .... I myself have paid a low $xxxx for a domain I wanted that has excellent seo ranking potential.... I had the site ranked in 4 months and was getting an around 50 000 visitors per month. EMD do still carry weight...sure not as much as they used to but when it comes to cctld's they actually still help alot.
