Dear SnapNames Customer,
Domain name(s) that you have placed a bid on are now scheduled for auction at a starting bid that is greater than your current maximum bid.
In order to win a domain name, the reserve price must be met and your bid must be the winning bid.
Be sure to check on the start day of the auction for the actual start time. Note that if multiple equal bids are received, the first bidder wins the opening bid.
To view the current state of these auctions, or change your maximum bids, click here.

So let me get this straight, SnapNames wants another $20 because they would like me to have backordered a domain for $79... but yet I was an early bird that backordered the domain for $59. No wonder SnapNames becomes more and more irrelevant.

Did someone else order it also?

Usually you get into the auction at the minimum price....but maybe another bidder was $20 higher than you already?

More than one bidder?

I don't think it is skullduggery (LOL, I love that word :D )

Did you have the backorder in before it was actually showing as expiring in their system ?

I'v had the same email a few times, I think the default price on snapnames is $59 so when their system actually acknowledges that it is going to drop then they sometimes adjust the price up to $79 or even $99 depending on which registrar the name is at, eg: $99 for a register.com domain .

That was my conclusion anyway ;)

I backordered the domain several months ago. The odds of someone else backordering it are very slim, given the name in question. Its amazing that SnapNames has to play games with bait-n-switch pricing and yet NameJet will allow a backorder to go through at $29.

Its a really poor policy to allow a domain to be backordered for a certain price and then find the need to adjust the price later.

They all used to be $39 at snap but I guess the registrars got greedy and demanded more money - you have to remember that many domains get passed directly from the registrar to snap, namejet or tdnam (their partner), its not like it's just a case of whoever grabs it auctions it.

Only when it comes to pending deletes is it free reign. I'd blame the registrars IMO - They're getting more demanding by the day :(
