At the risk of sounding patronising, especially as I am not a fully seasoned domainer, with that above attitude you should do well. Most people "know better" even when new, and don't take advice. At first you should read a lot, read between the lines, and figure out things for yourself as there's a lot of "false hope" around.

At first try not to be too creative etc, stick to something that has obvious commercial value, and aim to make smaller profit at first while you learn. A lot of newcomers buy thinking they'll make thousands, and that takes knowledge and experience.
