Every day, almost 1,000 Americans file some kind of identity-theft complaint with the US Federal Trade Commission, and about 750 report being scammed by an impostor, as in a “phishing” scheme.

That is part of the reason hundreds of businesses, from Google to Wal-Mart, have paid $185,000 to apply for the rights to Web domains that read: .google or .walmart.

Companies buying these eponymous Top-tier domains from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

so after 5 years from now..... query like "send money" in paris will end up with results of: sendmoney.hsbc or sendmoney.paris or sendmoney.fr or sendmoney.westernunion or send.money or sendmoney.now or money.send...or xpress.money......etc

There are many alternatives now :) But big brands gtlds might take over all premium keywords...

10 years from now .com will be an afterthought. Though for the next 7 years or so .com will still be gold.

@brandnow I agree with you to some extent.
Big brands will go for those new gTLDs that represent a specific brand. But small businesses, whose numbers are many times more than big companies, would keep using .COM mostly.
And hence, the .COM will remain gold forever.
