Ok,

to start with you won't be paid any money but you will have a 5% stake in any profits the website takes. I've been talking through the idea with a friend and although we don't think it's unique, we think we might have an angle and we hope to be able to get 20,000 members in a year increasing exponentionally there on in. We're not going to be pouring money into it, but rather hoping word of mouth will help do it's own publicity. The concept is very simple and I believe easy to do (not so easy that I could do it).

The closest website I can think of is scribd.com. I'm going to be sitting down with my friend and ironing out the fine details in the next week to produce a business plan. So if you're interested pm me or reply back here. Also add any websites you may have done. This is a real garage or rather pub project that might just take off.

I would prefer it it your from England, better still London, but at the end of the day if you can do a good job it doesn't matter.

No offense, but you must be very young if you think that you can accomplish the goal of getting 20,000 members in a year without advertising or even bothering to invest in a website designer, let alone the programming needed for a site like you showed in your sample.

I will do you a favor and explain what you are going to need so that you understand projects like this are a HUGE undertaking and require an investment in marketing.

a) You need someone to design you a template for your website. You can hire someone, get a friend to do it for free or buy a template from places like TemplateMonster.com (which is probably your best bet).

b) You need the back end programming for a site like scribd.com to run. That's not all just fancy HTML. There is a lot of coding behind that site that is making it functional. However social networking sites like this are so last year so the programming code to do it is becoming more and more available. You can probably get some hack to php script you something for $200 or so bucks. Nothing fancy, just the basics but enough to start.

c) If you build it they won't come. That's not how things work. No matter what your product or service is, you need traffic to sell it. I always say, you can sell anything you want on the Internet (even dog poo) and with enough traffic you will do well at it. Large amounts of traffic are truly the key to success to any great website. So if you want your project to be a success you need to advertise it.

This will include a variety of methods including SEO for your site, ppc advertising programs like Google's Ad Sense, trading links, Buying banner ads or text links on other sites, membership referral bonuses and yes, eventually even word of mouth.

With a great domain, about $1000 and a HUGE amount of hard work, you might be able to get your site off the ground and have about 500 members but that's FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR from 20,000.

Hi Kelli,

Thanks for replying, I don't know the ins and outs of some of the stuff you were talking about so you could say I'm young in that sense, but my responsibility is not the I.T. side of things, but you broke it down for me pretty well. We've since found our developer.

edited because I went on too much of a self explanatory rant. I do think I could come up with the members anyway we'll see when it's done.

Free unlimited storage for 20k users? Plan on a monthly budget of $USD400-500 for a single fully managed dedicated server with 20TB bandwidth. More than a couple hundred concurrent users and you will need more servers. I don't think a $99 budget box at rackspace is going to help retain members.

Plus anyone who is good enough to pull this off is going to do it for themselves rather than for a small slice of the pie
