I was reading this morning and came across a closing GD auction for a domain ei8ht.com. What surprised me is that the bidding is just under $600. I guess the reason is the age. Originally registered in 2006.

Other than that, am I missing something. This is exactly the type of domain most people would say is a waste. What could possibly be the reason to want this domain. I can't even pronounce it.

What gives?

Here's the link:

Looks like an enduser- they don't have to have a reason. He owns a candle shop, I'm not seeing the connection.
I think it's a waste too, but as they say "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

The domain is registered in net, org & co apart from xyz & club. Perhaps it has something to do with the lucky 8 in chinese.

the '8' can look like a 'g' so its a matter of artistic branding i guess.

I kind of thought the same thing about the 8.

It's similar to writing Se7en. Because it looks like Seven and uses the number 7. I bet it's taken in most old gtlds. Also (sounds like) can also have demand, for example, a big demand in Kuwait for short domains that have Q8 in them to replace the country name because these letters sound like the country name.
Of course, we all know the prefixes 4/2 to replace For/To. These are old ways of making up domains that still have some fans.
