is it valid to put a link inside a heading? (h1, h2, etc.)

am i better off keeping my headings as text or as links to the page that is being viewed? (for seo/validation purposes)

I don't think so.
Those are for headings only. Doubt it can work for links.

Yes, you can do that - they're just block level elements, like <p>'s and <div>'s.

and for seo purposes - is a link within th heading better/worse than just text? or is it read nearly the same way?

I normally try to place keyword(s) in header tags and and link(s) on any given page. occasionaly I've had links in headers. Exactly how the search engines weigh this is anyone's guess, but I've never seen a notable difference, good or bad. Assuming you aren't doing it in a spammy way (being overly repetitive, using keywords with no relationship to the rest of the page content), you should be fine. Put the links wherever it makes the most sense for your visitors.

From what I have seen in some forum scripts the subject is automatically made as header of that page. And is linked to that page you are reading. :)
