Katrina Evacuees Blow Federal Relief $$

Hurricane Katrina evacuees hastily handed $2,000 in federal relief money last month have been living it up on Cape Cod, blowing cash on booze and strippers, a Herald investigation has found.

Herald reporters witnessed blatant public drinking at a Falmouth strip mall by Katrina victims living at taxpayer expense at Camp Edwards on Otis Air Force Base. And strippers at Zachary's nightclub in Mashpee, a few miles from the Bourne base, report giving lap dances to several evacuees.

Theres always some who abues the relief efforts.

There are still a lot of people who didnt recieve any type of funding yet, and most of them really need it.

I don't know, I'm not surprised about this. If I had spent a month or two in the street after losing my home and possessions and I was handed $2,000 I'd want to enjoy myself too. Wouldn't you?

I'm not saying what the evacuees did wasn't wrong, but I belief the relief effort should have been more professional and less haphazard. Handng money on a plate to people in need has almost never worked before so why would it work now?

How sad! There is much more that can be said on this matter, but the end result would be the same... how sad.

What it really reflects on is the half assed way in which the money was distributed in the first place.

Much of the federal funds come from donations made by people who assume the money will be given to people who actually need it.

To just start handing out money with no accountability at all is absurd.
