Under the leadership of former Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz and outgoing Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, Microsoft Corporation and Yahoo! Inc. signed a ten-year Search Alliance in 2009 as part of an effort to effectively compete against Google's search advertising platform.
Before the deal was signed, Yahoo! turned down a $44.6 billion acquisition offer from Microsoft. Yahoo!’s current CEO Marissa Mayer is not happy with with the deal, which is why she tried to slow down the Search Alliance rollout in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
