Hey guys
I know a little about domaining, but nothing about website hosting. I'd like to get off the ground with, say, no more than 10 websites (minisites I guess) to begin with.

Can anyone recommend a good book or website which will explain all the basics to me? (ie. what to look for in hosting plans, how to create websites, the different tools available, how to monetize the websites....)

Thanks

well, if you're looking for a great service with lots and lots of support, I suggest you get a nice little reseller hosting account from wirenine.com. 24/7 chat support will really get you off the ground without spending too much time with books.

Thanks

I am just getting my knowledge bank filled up too. I checked out the site you suggested and wanted to say thanks for the info.

The pricing is great. Now all I have to do is figure out how to get started. I know nothing about the technical background of websites. I come loaded with sales and marketing experience. I have a partner that does all the web programming. Im sure he will agree that the site you suggested is a great provider.

Thanks for sharing.

If you have anything else you can suggest please do.

For a bit of free marketing, put your domains in your signature on forums like this one and if appropriate, put them in the signature of your email.

I use polurnet.com for my hosting. It's cheap and the customer service is top notch (Polurnet is a member here at NP). I'm no expert at developing, but I know that for a minisite to be profitable you need traffic (either from type in, SE, or forwarded from other domains).

I'll check out Polurnet and compare against HostGator...which I'd researched and was ready to pull the trigger on.

I've got the reseller lite package. I believe it is about $7/month for unlimited domains and plenty of space/bandwidth for your minsites.

I don't see that on the website. What's the diff between reseller and shared?

reseller hosting is for business minded people. it allows you to resell a hosting as if you own a hosting company.

shared is the way to go. its the normal hosting package most people take.

dedicated servers means you get the entire server to yourself, but only if you have tons of cash.

for 10 minisites, it sounds suitable for shared hosting. :)

Well, it is always good to make sure your host has a decent cpanel with good programs and scripts you can integrate etc. I think a good way to learn is just from experience. Get a shared hosting plan, and start practicing, and get used to the interface etc.

Some useful info that might help you understand a few things: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_hosting_service

Best of luck in all of your future endeavors,
