The stroke on the text is too thick (in Pixels) You should use a different color on the stroke or not even using it. The Edges on the cartton character on the right is edgy, maybe you would like to cut them properly. For the Background, it would be better if you would brush them, you can find great brushes at deviantart.com. Well not bad if its your first attempt. I was even worse that what you did. Well, you could prob. check out this Photoshop tutorial site, thats where i picked up my skills from. www.good-tutoruals.com.

It looks good but i agree that the white border on the cartoon needs to be removed and the border around the text needs to be a differnet colour to the background.

The white space around the picture can be eliminated by an INSIDE stroke of 2-3 pixels, black color. Other than that it's 8/10.

the revised version is much better, I like the background,
Just I would suggest to use white outline for the title it should make much more readable (then I think you could even reuse the red you used in the first version around it if you liked it.).
