I was wondering if it`s possible to buy poor country domain extensions and register them without having to do anything with ICANN...so is it possible? If yes, then how?

www.tv has paid 4 or 5 millions dollars to have the exclusive right of .tv registration.

Don't you think 14 years old is a little too young to be a Registrar?

Create your own country... Declare independance from the state in which you live and then apply to ICANN for your ccTLD...

Thats the best chance you have...

Not really, most teenagers have a lot more free time than adults. However I highly doubt that he will be able to find that kind of money, especially at 14.

Simply put...No. The only way around ICANN is to use extensions it doesn't recognize. Then you have the problem that for users to even view the site, they'd have to download a program you built to direct their browsers to any domains ending in that extention (simular to what www.namespace.org & www.dotworlds.net do). ONLY ICANN recognized domain extentions resolve to everyone, since browsers (few exeptions..like .info often requiring http:// actually be typed in front of it in the address bar in goofy IE configurations) automatically use ICANN designated root servers (actually your browser goes to your ISP, who does this). This said, other than those who download this pugin you create, no one will see your sites, hence killing the use of any domains under the extention.

Right on Brother, Im with you....

I wanna be sole owner of the .tit namespace and if ICANN is not happy then they can go to hell.

And before everyone comes a rushing, I ve reserved IamA.tit, ActLikeA.tit and WhatA.tit for the central registry. So, if anyone can actually see my site, goto www.tit and place your orders for the forthcoming "tit rush - phase 1".

And like Hell-Knight, I dont give a stuff about ICANN eighter..

.tk = Tokelau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokelau) - Registrable at .tk registry (http://www.dot.tk/en/index.html)

You can register them by becomeing a reseller for another company (most domain sites you see are), becuase it is hard and somewhat expensive to become ICANN accredited. But you asked about creating own extension. I agree (even being a US citizen) that the US has too much authroity over the matter. Luckily, they do not have as much authrority as they used to (The US has been under very heavy world preasure to let ICANN and IANA be more independant). In the meantime, nothing you can do about it. But, ICANN's rules are their own, and not dictated by US law directly. ICANN has become, due to the preassure on the US Commerce Department, more of a truelly international body. And the United Nations, while thinking that the US still has too much pull in the matter, has decided that (atleast for the time being) ICANN is the only real method currently working that will keep some form of uniformity to the whole internet and not let the system crash around our ears. It basically amounts to you have to play by their (ICANN's) rules, or you don't play the game.
