Value of Country Names - asked by reader

Wednesday, May 28, 2008 - posted by larry

I recently received the following email:

Dear Larry:

Greetings from a fellow domainer. I would like to bring to your attention a couple of country domain names, if you have the time to answer to my question:

According to a thread on a commercial domain forum starting from words "I turned down last month a $2,000 offer"), he received offers for his premium country domain names, in Italian, in the following amounts:

"I turned dow last month a $2,000 offer on XXXXXXX.tv (A country name in Italian) and last week another one ($3,000) of XXXXXXXX.tv (Another country name in Italian)"

I am curious, how much could these domains be really worth? Would it be something about 5 to 6 thousand dollars?

Many thanks in advance for your opinion.

Tony

Dear Tony,

I feel that .com Geo names are the most valuable. I do not find .tv to have any value. Also, the fact that they are in Italian in the .tv extension adds to my thoughts that these domains seem worthless. Thats just my opinion.

Having a preference

This gentlemen certainly has a bias towards .com, that's fine, however, I believe his position regarding .tv is a bit narrow minded and the future success of the .tv domain extension will prove this out.

I Guess we should all now let out Geo .tv's drop as they are worthless

He is just like many domainers who does not show any interest in .tv but guys like this make it easier for us to grab the top .tv's without the massive competition from other domainers.

Personally i dont care too much what anyone thinks about .tv, i'm more than happy with my domains and how the extension is growing so nobody giving an opinion will change my view.

:D

Richard should have listened to him...

Why didn't he let televisions.tv drop instead of selling it for $25K ?

True.

But the problem is that many many .tv sales are simply not reported on DNJournal for various reasons that have been discussed on here.

Moreover, many big .tv domains are being bought by large media companies and corporations that want to keep them private, meaning that there's often a non-disclosure agreement.

All this means that it's very easy to be unaware of the actual state of the current .tv market.

So they had offers of $2000 and $3000 but are also worthless... that sounds like worth to me :|

I am curious on this and still am but why does every .tv name have to be reported to ron?

Some people just don't want the public to know things. Then some buyers just want it confidential.

Sure its good for .tv but deep down it all boils down to what you prefer.

You can't force a gun to someone and say you have to report your .tv sales.

But to each to there own way and respect people that don't want it out.

To be honest i don't see any great value in the type of domains mentioned in that question but it's the way the guy replying completely dismisses .tv's without any explanation, reasons or sales data that makes me laugh.

His line "I do not find .tv to have any value." is just nuts, shows he knows nothing about .tv's
BUT
His line "Also, the fact that they are in Italian in the .tv extension adds to my thoughts that these domains seem worthless."
I sort of agree with him on that though not to the degree that i would say they are worthless, i just don't think they have great value.
Country name .tv's in their Italian spelling going for $2,000 - $3,000 is a shock to me though, unless they were Italian speaking countries of course.

I know there is a few people on the board who own Geo's spelt in Italian, Spanish & other languages who will totally disagree with me but i can't see the value in many of them unless the language has a strong affiliation with the Country name (For example : The French spelling of France obviously is great but i see very little value in the French spelling of Germany)

Just to confirm: I am NOT saying alternative language .tv Geo's have No Value but i would not expect them to be getting high fee's unless the language & Country name have some affiliation.

:imho:

Ronnie
Excuse the bad spelling, i try type too fast when i'm a terrible typist :red:

I saw your comment there. Well done, as it really shows how groundless his point of view is. However I doubt that he'll reply to you. He seems very narrow-minded and he'll probably just ignore or delete it.

I agree with you to some extent. I personally do see value in these .tv domains, but not as much value as in the case when language and country are directly related.

For example, deutschland.tv which is a geo .tv in the language (German) which is used by locals (German people). This is why deutschland.tv is a very valuable domain, same as scotland.tv or australia.tv for example.

Let's say someone else owns allemagne.tv (Germany in French) or germany.tv (same in English). Then I still think that these would be valuable and could well be used for videocentric sites about Germany, but in French or English language rather than in German.

IMHO domains like deutschland.tv and germany.tv would be the most valuable ones, because German is the language used by German people and because English is the international language spoken by lots of people worldwide.
Allemagne.tv (in French) would be less valuable but still valuable because of the close ties between France and Germany, because lots of French people are living/working in Germany, etc.
But germany.tv in other languages like Spanish, Portuguese, Czech, etc. would be less and less valuable, because they aren't closely related to the country itself. Endusers/buyers would be more and more difficult to find.

Country geo .tv domains in non-local languages do still have some value as is proven by previous domain sales. For example, duitsland.tv (Germany in Dutch) was sold for $343 on Sedo, engeland.tv (England in Dutch) was sold for $135 on Sedo, etc. But that's nowhere near $2,000 or $3,000 that they were talking about...

I see things very similar to you on this point.
I understand that these foreign language domains will have some worth & a certain market but to expect them to consistently be getting $2k - ยฃ3k is very unlikely IMHO
