Hello All,

Can someone tell me please, if an .info name can ever be as good as a .com, when the name provides information?
If not, why not?
Some examples of top .info's would be handy!

Thanks all who reply.

Info's rule

I think so , if it is an Information site, for Instance SaleSite.info Describe's Site is for Information About SaleSites.Whereas SaleSite.com could be a SaleSite itself or information Site. I may be biased with 40+ .info Domains
But a lot of people still have the .com for everything Mindset
Different Tld's for Different Purposes.
I still Think the Best extension I have ever seen is .Geek.Nz

This thread would be 100% opinion.

Would it ever be AS good? That is hard to say. I think .info definately does have potential in areas where the market is spammed. For example, if I was looking soley for information on viagra and viagra.com was #1 and viagra.info was #2 I may be more inclined to go to #2.

Though in all honest, when you leave the .com section, the extension doesn't mean much. When you look at the SERPs, do you look at the title/description or the domain?

Maybe one day but it would be many years from now. Today there is not even a convergence trend between the prices of both extensions (It seems quite the opposite, the breach seems to keep increasing). It does not make sense to develop a project in the .info (even if it makes more sense than the .com) knowing that at least the 20% of the traffic will go to the .com.

How about "public information" .info's? e.g. bus routes.info or are all these, .coms and .nets?
I see that some of us have a special liking for .info's. That's fine for those who wish to develop etc., but would a public concern or corp be interested in .info?
I'm thinking of perhaps getting to an appropriate end user.
Appreciate any further thoughts.

sex.info is probably the best .info out there :p

After the .info's were given away for free there value really decline. .com will always be top dog :)

Thanks for replies fellas. Got the gist.
Now, I know that .net is second only to .com - bearing in mind (your very helpful) comments - can I pose the hypothetical situation, whereby the .com of a "public information" name has gone, but both .net and .info are available.

Bearing in mind that specific information is wanted, would people look at .info before .net?
Further, does anyone know any examples of where .info is used succesfully in public information sites?

com will be the default for some time to come, and has the advantage of type-ins. Once you're past dot-com, it's a matter of opinion, availability, and how the TLD "fits" the name. Personally, I weight .info and .net about the same overall, with one better than the other depending on the name.

Good question charbar! I am surprised there hasn’t been significant flaming between the .info lovers and .info haters in this thread.

At this time, .Com is as good as it gets when it comes to AVERAGE resale value and public recognition. Based on reports of sales that I have seen of english word .INFO sales (of the same .COM names), they are mostly 5% to 20% of the .COM value. That may change in time as .INFO gains recognition.

As far as examples of top .Infos, pure .INFOs frequently mentioned are:

WWW.MTA.INFO and
WWW.WTCRELIEF.INFO

personally I do not like .info's, but they will get better. All extensions will get more valuable.
