Inexplicable IE issue

inexplicable IE/FF issues

Hi all. I have this problem on one of my pages with a table. It's very strange.

http://www.deefrag.com/bio/biography.htm

If you view it with Firefox, the left side of the table is messed up (though the setup in FrontPage, according to the numbers, should be mathematically perfect). Then, when you view the page in IE, everything is good, except that the whole left left of the table (that dark-gray strip) completely changes color. Completely.

Can anyone figure out why this is happening? I can't make any sense of either of these issues.

No CSS or anything is in use, as far as I know. It's just regular old-fashioned FrontPage 2003 being unpredictable, and I can't correct the problem in Dreamweaver. (I'm not a coder though, so I was only able to tinker with the GUI settings in the hopes that it would untie whatever code knots were messing this up)

Thanks.

Just viewed your site in both Safari and Firefox - and it displays well in each

Not sure if this is relevant: but my firefox seems to not be entirely truthful of late - seems to have happened after the last apple update for me.

Hmm... it has been messed up in my Firefox for almost a year (though it is up to date). It's just now that I'm trying to get it resolved though by presenting it here.

This is what I see:

ok - now I see what you mean.

By comparing your jpg's - My Safari view displays the same as your IE (exactly) and my Firefox is the same as yours (exactly). Think the angle of my screen played a part here initially.

Apologies for the false hope - hope you can get some joy here though

You have a few issues here, to fix the broken edge you need to change the width of the main table from 600 down to 599 as the total column widths do not add up to 600 hence the 1 pixel glitch.

The other issue is strange as it should be pulling the background colour for the column on the right from the png file but it seems to ignore it.

The mystery colour (color) in the left column is expected as that is the background colour stored in the png file 'window_left_a1.png' but it does not do the same for the right column???.

Hmm, setting the table width to 599 seemed to fix all of the Firefox problems completely. Thanks a lot, stogid. :)

The only remaining issue is the strange one in IE, with the background color of the left column. :-/ Actually, I realized that you were right, and it's actually all of the OTHER columns - not the left one - that are displaying wrong. Apparently, the left column is correct, but everything else (including the big chrome button) is too dark in IE7.

IE still has not fixed their png support yet. IE7 can now do alpha channels with pngs but you will often find pngs will appear darker due to inconsistent gamma correction. Your best bet to fixing it would be to resave the images as gifs.
