Hi. I have read a few things about ICANN. Mainly about google becoming an ICANN registrar.

What I wanted to know is, what is ICANN, can anyone be an ICANN registrar and is ICANN the only way to provide cheap domains?

I always thought that you could "make" domains just like hosting. Is there no way of having a domain "server" as such?

ICANN.org is the governing body for the internet's naming system. They are the ones who can appoint who can "create" domain names, at least officially.

Technically, anyone can do this (just "make" domains); in fact, many have already tried creating such alternative systems. The problem is getting everyone else on the internet to recognize our domains. As it stands, only ICANN's officially appointed guardians are universally recognizable.
