i recently received a ticket for speeding. 82 in a 55. Can I get the date changed?

I have regionals the day of my court date and I dont want to miss it. Its my senior year in high school and I'm hoping I can get some money for college playing sports.

Since it is sort of for the benefit of my education, do you think theyd cut me a break?

Note: I tried to pay the ticket but since I'm 18 and still in high school they require me to appear in court with a parent.

Hm, do you have to actually appear in court or do they have an option to mail in the fine?

To be honest, the probably could care less but it never hurts to try.

Are you appealing the ticket? I'd recommend you fight it unless the cop got your speed on radar. Sometimes since you are young if you agree to take a driving class, you can get the ticket canceled and it wont bump your insurance.

I'm not appealing it. I tried to pay it but they just returned the check and told me I have to appear in court.

Also I was thinking of asking for an earlier date so it doesnt make it seem like I'm putting it off.

You should be able to ask for a continuance and maybe they will give you a new court date?

I've tried this both with and without an attorney. The first time I used an attorney (a friend), he got me four continuances and they ended up offering me a reduced fine and no points against my record if I would just plead guilty and mail in the fine. Easy-peasy-Japaneasy.

A few years later I got another ticket (different city) and I tried to get a continuance myself. They absolutely REFUSED to give me a continuance. They told me if I didn't show up they'd have a warrant put out for my arrest.

If your event is very important to your future career, get a lawyer to request the continuance.

You're 18 and they're requiring a parent to come with you?

That doesn't make sense. If you're 18 years old, you are legally an adult. Your parents are not responsible for you anymore.

Am I wrong?

That's what I'm saying.

You are not wrong.

Assuming (looked up your domain whois) you got the ticket in Indiana ...

Paying Your Indiana Traffic Ticket link (not an official state site):
http://www.dmv.org/in-indiana/paying-tickets.php

Certain traffic violations automatically mean that you must go to court. Examples of these are:

Driving while under suspension
Child-restraint violation
Failing to provide proof of financial responsibility
Driving without ever having a
license
Passing a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children
Driving over 35 miles per hour more than the speed limit
Additionally, you'll have to appear in court if instructed to by the police officer or a court official.

Also, if you're younger than 18, you'll need to bring a parent or guardian with you to court, except if you're just guilty of a seat belt infraction.

Not sure why you're being required to come to court. Doesn't make sense to me ... unless there's something more to the story ... you only got cited for the speeding or some other stuff too?

Being in high school shoudn't matter, but maybe it does in Indiana (assuming that where it happened)?

Only speeding.
They said I'm considered a minor since I'm still living with my parents and in highschool.
The ticket was $153. I called and they changed the date for me.

Thanks for the help guys!
