I need some advice also

I have a website # 2 out of 205,000 in Dmoz for its category.

First page of google search results in several countries and has good traffic from search.

I am in the process of changing the site.

How do I keep from loosing my search engine position when I switch to new site?

I am not an expert in this but I think what you have to look for is mod-rewrite and htaccess 301 redirect. That should keep you from losing your search traffic.
