Hummingbird Confusion

More and more I read about the latest Google update and more and more I feel like I'm going crazy. Everywhere I turn my head I read about how great and nice this latest update it is because now includes the ''human factor'' aka voice search using mobile devices. But let me tell my story: I run a relatively small site (around 1000 pages) created 3 years ago. The website is a Freeware Download Repository for Windows, something like Softpedia, Snapfiles etc...

The entire website is build on STATIC pages so you can image the struggle and the huge amount of work to if I have to adapt 1000 static pages to the new Google Hummingbird rules.

The website was doing great before the Hummingbird, now is pretty dead, being heavily penalized by the Hummingbird and losing almost 80% of the Google traffic. I never did Black Hat Seo, I always kept my keywords and tittle tags short and relative to the content, never spammed, never purchased links.

Hummingbird says that is mostly about the ''human factor voice searches'' but how and why a person will search from an Android phone something for Windows (and not a Windows Tablet app) but an EXE for Windows XP or Windows 7?

Now, as my level of English understanding when it comes to technical stuff is average my question is the following:

What's is more correct for the Hummingbird?

1. A page with the title ''DivX Free Download''
2. A page with the tittle ''DivX 1.0.2 Free Download''
3. A page with the tittle ''Download DivX 1.0.2''
4. A page with the tittle''DivX Free Download - Powerful Video Player''
5. A page with the tittle''DivX 1.0.2 Free Download - Powerful Video Player''?

Thank you!

The first thing you have to understand is that Hummingbird is NOT an ranking algo or a penalty. * It's an update of the "engine" which powers the whole thing. (Similar to "caffeine", which addressed indexing.)

Hummingbird tries (<- not always successfully) to select pages which it feels best align with user INTENT behind a query, rather than blindly relying on keywords, to return search results.

Very simplistic example: Let's say prior to Hummingbird you typed "How big is the Washington Monument" into Google Search. The search engine would look for pages matching [how big] [Washington] [Monument].

Hummingbird would realize that by "big" you probably wanted to know the height of the monument, and return pages answering that question, regardless of whether they had the word "big" in them.

Are there ways to optimize for it? That's what people are trying to figure out. One thing that has been noted is that they may be identifying and screening duplicate pages based on INTENT now (i.e. displaying the most authoritative page for a particular intent in response to a search.)

The 200+ factors which score pages and determine search rankings, including Panda, Penguin, Above the Fold, EMD, etc. are still a part of it. There was recently a big Penguin update and Panda is constantly being updated now - if you took a "waterfall" hit, those are the likely suspects.

Analysis of the patent believed to be Hummingbird - http://www.seobythesea.com/2013/09/google-hummingbird-patent/

PS - Any of your titles would be fine, as long as there IS a free download of that video player on the page in question. Titles should always be unique to the page and describe the page content.

PPS - Check your links anyway. Especially if you were doing well in a competitive niche - a competitor may have spammed some bad links at your site.

This was very helpful, thank you. Maybe my question looked silly but I asked that because I see a lot of my competitors started to change the title tag from:

''Download DivX 1.0 - Powerful Video Player - Name of the site here''

to simply

''DivX Free Download''

..so I was wondering if is something that all the software download sites must change in order to be more ''Hummingbird friendly'.

Do they have "Powerful Video Player" on a lot of their other pages? Or are a lot of sites using that phrase? They may be trying to make the page titles more unique and targeted and minimize the possibility of being filtered as duplicate content.

Hey humming bird talks about relevancy. I think I got the reason why u are having problem with your website.
I was going through CloudPenguin site of yours. Hey you need to put some relevant content about each of the things. you need to talk with points as how this is important and why needs to be downloaded. benefits and uses. It is like if I am writing about cloud penguin in google then the landing page should talk about these terms.
Humming bird not only goes by the keywords but also behind the keywords. that is it undersatnds why the person would have wrote it and what he would be expecting by typing this. Hope, it works.

What type of โ€œnewโ€ search activity does Hummingbird help?

โ€œConversational searchโ€ is one of the biggest examples Google gave. People, when speaking searches, may find it more useful to have a conversation.

โ€œWhatโ€™s the closest place to buy the iPhone 5s to my home?โ€ A traditional search engine might focus on finding matches for words โ€” finding a page that says โ€œbuyโ€ and โ€œiPhone 5s,โ€ for example.

Hummingbird should better focus on the meaning behind the words. It may better understand the actual location of your home, if youโ€™ve shared that with Google. It might understand that โ€œplaceโ€ means you want a brick-and-mortar store. It might get that โ€œiPhone 5sโ€ is a particular type of electronic device carried by certain stores. Knowing all these meanings may help Google go beyond just finding pages with matching words.

In particular, Google said that Hummingbird is paying more attention to each word in a query, ensuring that the whole query โ€” the whole sentence or conversation or meaning โ€” is taken into account, rather than particular words. The goal is that pages matching the meaning do better, rather than pages matching just a few words.

Hummingbird places greater emphasis on page content making search results more relevant and pertinent and ensuring that Google delivers users to the most appropriate page of a website, rather than to a home page or top level page.
