I would just add that if looking for SSL for a single site, like your domain main location, paying for a SSL from your registrar will not have much of an impact on your overall annual costs. However, if you have plans to develop many multi-sites, and want SSL on each, they can add up and considering one of the hosts with integration with LetsEncrypt may be wise.
With changes to Chrome notification, I think SSL is pretty well essential, even though I still see a fair number of established sites not yet SSL secure.
Some registrars are offering packages with the SSL free for a year, although costs will come in after that.
