Hi Everyone,

I'm a total noob at web programming but now I'm learning HTML and it seems easy enough. I've made some very basic sites on my computer. But, what do I need to know to begin developing my own websites (that look nice)? Is it necessary for me to learn other programming languages? What do you guys use to develop your websites? Thanks !

Personally, I like using CMS like Joomla or Drupal

CMS systems are feature-rich and easier to update after you create them, but quite a bit more technical to setup. However, the skills you develop creating CMS-based sites will serve you LONG into the future. HTML and Photoshop is old school and can be more difficult to update/modify/customize, IMHO. So it really depends on whether this one quick-and-dirty web project, or something you want to do a lot of or add features to down the road.

Good luck with your project. I have done it both ways, hundreds of HTML sites created with Photoshop/Frontpage in the past, plus hundreds of Joomla and Drupal sites in the past two years (These days, I prefer Joomla).

Either way you go, start with a template, either a paid or a free one.

Thanks for the info. I might try them both out as well. Any other comments would be much appreciated. -B

i would recommend cms systems for complex sites, and photoshop-designed sites for basic html templating.

Blimn,

I know HTML very well, JaveScritp fairly well, php MySQL decent....

Here is an example of a site I put up using Joomla.... InvestmentFirms.net It is a minisite that took me about an hour to slap together.... Not much content. However installing Joomla is simple, and adding pages is even easier.. At the same time it allows you to mess around with HTML, etc....

Ideally, learn as much about coding as you can and customize each to your liking. however until you get there a FREE CMS like Joomla is a very nice tool... I would be willing to help you with the install/other issues/questions if you have any. Feel Free to PM me....

I am not saying Joomla is the end all because it isn't and it has issues too... Hope this helps....

For a static site that isnt going to change a lot Photoshop is also an acceptable route

Also Joomla has alot of free extensions: extensions.joomla.org
and also has alot of free templates: Joomla24.com

you can start from the basic HTML and CSS,
it's quite enough for beginners.
