Hi guys and gals.
I have let about 800 names drop over the last year and was wondering how much of your original "investment" you still have.
I realize its a broad question and has many variables.. So please explain.

How many did you have at your peak of buying?
How many do you have now?
How many are developed?
How many premiums?
How many did you sell for a profit?
How much have you lost or made over this time?

Ill start it off.

Had 900 .tv names at 1 time.
Now Have 65
None are developed.
3 premium names.
I sold 12 for a profit of 17,000 =
Im about even now I guess give or take 1 or 2k.

cheers. :)

How many did you have at your peak of buying?
Including .TV TV.com and TV.co.uk --- 2500ish

How many do you have now?
1345

How many are developed?
Under ten

NOTE: I've spent more money on development than domains. I've also taken a bigger loss on development (So far).

How many premiums?
Now four - and four I am VERY happy to own and pay the premium on. (US DIY RS and ED)
Down from, I think, sixteen.
Premiums are a very dangerous game, so tread carefully. Most of the ones I bought were for a project that never came off and has since been drastically changed.
(moment of realisation came while watching The Producers and hearing the two rules of show business)

How many did you sell for a profit?

Everyone has different reasons for buying. Most of mine were bought for a bigger project (my background is newspapers) but as time goes on you end up becoming a domainer whether you like it or not.
I tend to 'batch' names for different purposes, so rarely take each name on its own as a profit/loss thing - instead I look to make a profit from the batch. For example, I bought 100 names of a particular kind - sold one within the first few months - which effectively paid for those 100 for the cost of purchase AND the renewal. I had no further sales of that batch - so offloaded, or dropped the majority of the rest. I was still up.

In a nicer scenario, more would have sold to give a healthy profit. In a worse case scenario, none sell, so you drop after the first year.

I should add that I no longer pay for names or renewals with new money. That's important.

How much have you lost or made over this time?

Too early to call. I'm very disappointed about the loss on premiums (as I think many here also are) but very happy about the sums being seen in the 'quality' non-premium names.
The main thing is that I am optimistic, based on the reality of what I see happening in the real world.
Yesterday, stocks were crashing everywhere - but tech stocks like ebay stayed good.
The internet is permanent - television is permanent. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that they are becoming one and the same and their 'handle' is the now widely accepted .TV

Are these the rules you're talking about?
Max Bialystock: The two cardinal rules of producing. One: Never put your own money in the show.
Leo Bloom: And two?
Max Bialystock: Never put your own money in the show!

Bingo!

And these rules should never be forgotten if you are going to develop anything big.

That was a funny movie and broadway show, those rules usually don't apply in business. I know many venture capitalists who will not put a dime in unless the owners are fully committed. And not sure who is putting money into a domainers development idea without the domainer being invested in the idea. Now maybe if you have a great domain you could use that as the only equity and the investor knows if the project fails they will at least get a good domain. I am not saying it would not be ideal to put up none of your own money but its hard to have anything get done.
